Kunst-Gedanken in Tiecks «Franz Sternbalds Wanderungen»
Nehring, Wolfgang
University of California - Los Angeles, USA
Ludwig Tieck is not only the most productive and stimulating power of German Romanticism with respect to literature but also, largely unnoticed by his contemporaries and critics, an innovative proponent of a new art. His Sternbald goes way beyond the position of Wackenroder’s Herzensergießungen from which it started. It not only influenced the artwork of the two most important romantic painters, Philipp Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich, but advocates, in a way, twentieth-century ideas of modern painting.

La rappresentazione del rituale di poesia nel ciclo «Waller im Schnee» di Stefan George
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy
This paper focuses on para-religious elements in the poetry of Stefan George, with reference to the cycle Waller im Schnee, which occupies the middle of the first section in the collection Das Jahr der Seele (1897). The waning of the sentimental relationship between the protagonist and his interlocutor is linked to the loss of effectiveness of a priestly ritual, which in the past had held the two together and whose significance has now diminished through perplexity and misunderstanding.

Rilke contra Wagner. Rilke’s early concept of Music and the Convergence of the Arts around 1900
Eidt, Jacob-Ivan
University of Dallas, Texas (USA)
This article examines Rainer Maria Rilke’s fundamental distinction between the essence of music and poetry, concentrating on his earliest encounters with music around 1900 and their impact on his poetics. It places Rilke’s concept of music into the cultural context of the romantic experience and reception of music and the other arts in Germany at the turn of the century. Rilke’s early understanding is ultimately negative, deviating from the popularly held belief in fin de siècle Europe that all the arts are not just compatible but also in essence identical. For Rilke there can be neither a Wagnerian Gesamtkunswerk nor a greater underlying principle around which the arts could be united, despite his enthusiastic integration of the visual arts into his poetics.

«Tu, solo, con la storia alle spalle». Durs Grünbein e la DDR: un bilancio critico
Vecchiato, Daniele
Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, Italy
This paper analyses some of the most significant (post-)GDR poems by Grünbein and traces the development of aesthetic and poetological issues that are central to the poet’s oeuvre. It provides an articulated overview of Grünbein’s poetics by examining fundamental themes like the love/hate attitude towards his hometown Dresden, the complementary concepts of history and memory, and the materialism of the body as an antidote to utopias.

Die Tradition der Beredsamkeit und deutschsprachiger Rhetoriklehre im 19. Jahrhundert. Mit einem bibliographischen Anhang “Deutschsprachige Rhetorik-Handbücher des 19. Jahrhunderts”
Haase, Fee-Alexandra
Independent Researcher, Germany
This article focuses on rhetorical handbooks written in Germany during the 19th century. It traces back the tradition of rhetorical handbooks, which started in ancient Greece and developed into a branch of literature in Europe, where it is attested in various languages of the young national states. The books written and edited during the 19th century contribute to the history of rhetoric in Europe and demonstrate how rhetoric was implemented into the German educational system of the 19th century. A list of handbooks published during this period is a complementary element of research presented in this article.

Durchbruch e turgore. Tendenze regressive in «Gehirne» di Gottfried Benn
Di Noi, Barbara
Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy
The so-called Rönne-complex belongs to Benn’s early prose production and consists of a cycle of short texts held together by the anti-hero Rönne. Although he presents features which might suggest an identification with his author, the main character is not to be reduced to a mere mask or to Benn’s alter ego. Rönne represents only a partial autobiographical projection of his author, as he is exclusively concerned with the problem of art and expression. According to Nietzsche, he can only justify the world as a work of art.

Topographie und Topologie in Edith Kneifls Kriminalromanen
Saletta, Ester
Università degli Studi di Bergamo, Italy
Edith Kneifl’s thrillers follow a double geographical dimension, since Italy and Austria form the narrative setting of her criminal minds. Women who recall Lucrezia Borgia and men under the impulse of uncontrolled violent emotions move from town to town showing that the criminal setting is not just a plain narrative landscape but rather more of a topographic and topologic stage on which the human identity can let its unconsciousness be free to self-determination.

Le immagini del potere. La Deutsche Kunstgesellschaft e l’arte del Terzo Reich
Locatelli, Valentina
Università degli Studi di Bergamo, Italy
This essay deals with the uses of art for representing power in Germany from the Weimar Republic to the Second World War. It focuses on the figure of Bettina Feistel-Rohmeder and the origins of her Deutsche Kunstgesellschaft. A brief comparison of the art promoted by the German Art Society with the one later made official by Hitler’s regime will demonstrate their common roots in the völkisch (nationalistic) milieu and the romantic tradition. This essay also presents a selection of a few articles collected in “Das Bild”.

Thomas Mann: Ästhetizismus und die Denkstruktur des Einerseits-Andererseits – mit Bezug auf «Wälsungenblut»
Nehring, Wolfgang
University of California - Los Angeles, USA
Thomas Mann is an author without a fixed point of view. When he discusses a problem he tends to opt for an «on the one hand – on the other hand». His novella Wälsungenblut is the epitome of aestheticism. How is this aestheticism portrayed? For once the author appears to be unfaithful to his typical way of thinking and to give way to satire. One of the most interesting aspects is how Richard Wagner’s Walküre is included in this argument.

The journalist and popular travel writer, Egon Erwin Kisch, and the well-known novelist and short story writer Anna Seghers were among the many left wing and communist intellectuals for whom Mexico was a haven during the Hitler years. Kisch traveled extensively in Mexico, immersed himself in its history and culture and interpreted Mexico for the other German exiles. On her return from exile Seghers became an important mediator in the GDR of Mexican and South American culture and a strong voice for crosscultural understanding

Lo sguardo di Saturno. Critica della modernità e regimi scopici in «Die Ringe des Saturn» di W. G. Sebald
Ribatti, Nicola
Università degli Studi di Siena, Italy
Following the footsteps of Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialektik der Aufklärung, W. G. Sebald’s Die Ringe des Saturn develops a particular indictment of Enlightenment rationality, which manifests itself primarily as a critical examination of the three most prominent “scopic regimes” of the modern era: the “Cartesian Perspectivalism”, the “Descriptive paradigm” of Dutch seventeenth-century Art, and the “Baroque” visual culture. The critical exploration of these visual strategies stands in as representative for wide epistemological problems related to the rational ordering and organization of human thought and knowledge.

Liebe/Inzest: Zur kulturellen Kodierung von Sexualität Dargestellt am Beispiel von J. M. R. Lenz’ Komödie «Der neue Menoza»
Djoufack, Patrice
Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany
In his comedy «Der neue Menoza», J. M. R. Lenz uses a love story between an exotic prince and a young German woman to simulate and debate a form of sexuality which the Bible disqualifies as incestuous. Inscribing a theological exegesis of incest as intertext in his framework, Lenz demonstrates the possibility of shifting this biblical taboo. Taking this perspective as the starting point of my investigation, I regard incest as a cultural construction. In the light of two contemporary discourses, the article points at the abrogation of the incest taboo by means of a re-writing of the biblical prohibition to be a sensitive issue in the cultural debate on sexuality.

Per una lettura “begriffsgeschichtlich” della categoria di Gestalt. Le traduzioni di Stefan George dalla «Divina Commedia»

In the George-Kreis the category of “Gestalt” is often employed as a hermeneutic criterion for the interpretation of great authors of the past. Starting from the presence of the term “Gestalt” at various places in George’s translations from the Divina Commedia, which accompanied his poetic work for a long time, this article aims at reconstructing the way in which the paradigm of “Gestalt” fluctuates between the fields of historiographic inquiry and literary invention.

Eine frühe mediale Beschäftigung mit der Genderproblematik aus der Männerperspektive – zu Herbert Grönemeyers Popsongtext «Männer» und seinen Folgen
Giessen, Hans W.
University College of Social Sciences, Poland
Pop songs can be used as semiotic signs to give insight into public opinion simply because they have to prove themselves successfull in a commercial environment: they should reflect, not contradict, the general attitudes of the song’s buyers. In this article I will refer to the song «Männer» by Herbert Grönemeyer, questioning whether its text really breaks with traditional role models. I come to a somewhat qualifying answer. However, especially since Grönemeyer does not contradict the old role model, he seems to be credible when he ignores it in his later song «Mensch».

Uno spazio tutto per sé. La poetica degli «Ingolstädter Stücke» dal punto di vista di Marieluise Fleißer
Buglioni, Chiara Maria
Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy
Although the Fleißer-Forschung has always emphasized the link between Marieluise Fleißer and the strong personalities she worked with in the Weimar period, little attention has been paid to her active role as a playwright. This paper aims to demonstrate the original value of Fleißer’s artistic project by adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural production. The analysis of Fleißer’s “position-takings” in the Ingolstädter Stücke unravels the personal viewpoint from which her aesthetic choices are defined, as well as the “differential signification” of her poetics within the literary field.

Malicious Dwarfs, Fair Nymphs, Heroic Gods. Application and Transformation of Germanic Mythology in Richard Wagner’s libretto «The Rhinegold»
Blawid, Martin
Independent Researcher, Germany
According to Joachim Heinzle, the Nibelungensage represents the «most German among all German issues». The following essay seeks to analyze in how far the German composer Richard Wagner resorts either to a more traditional or to a more innovative representation of the Germanic influences in his libretto The Rhinegold, which is the opening part of his operatic tetralogy The Ring of the Nibelungen. Moving from an epistemological basis, the libretto will be examined with a special focus on how Wagner applies and transforms Germanic mythology in terms of the characters and of deictic references.

Theodor Storms Erstlingsnovelle «Marthe und ihre Uhr» (1847)
Hertling, G. H.
University of Washington, WA (USA)
This article intends to fill the previous void of a thorough critical assessment and interpretive analysis of Theodor Storm’s first novellistic, albeit concise narrative of 1847. As an aesthetic and highly symbolic story, Marthe’s seemingly timeless table clock bears some striking affinities with Eduard Mörike’s objet d’art of 1838, his «Lampe». As an ardent admirer of his contemporary Mörike, Storm here lays his theoretical and artistic foundations for his major novellas of later years.

Hofmannsthal, Rückert und Rūmī – zum Ghasel «Für Mich ...»
Zanucchi, Mario
Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany
The following paper analyses Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s ghazal «Für mich ...». It identifies for the first time Friedrich Rückert’s ghazal «Ich bin das Sonnenstäubchen ...» – an original poem only vaguely reminiscent of Djalāl-od-Dīn Rūmī’s Diwan – as the source of Hofmannsthal’s text. The comparison shows how Hofmannsthal introduces a pronounced metapoetic dimension while adapting distinguishing features of Rückert’s poem, such as the oxymoronic style and the recurrent use of the first person. In Hofmannsthal’s poem Rückert’s monistic merging of the self with nature gives way to an artistic re-shaping of everyday reality by the aesthete.

Impotent Masculinities in Frank Wedekind’s «Erdgeist»
Libbon, Stephanie E.
Kent State University, Ohio (USA)
For most of recorded history, the study of impotence fell under the purview of healers. This changed in the late nineteenth century, however, as the works of avant garde artists like the German dramatist and social critic Frank Wedekind ushered analyses of this malady into public discourse. In looking first at conditions in Europe during Wedekind’s time and then tracing the history of impotence from the Ancient Chinese up to Wedekind’s day, this article investigates how Wedekind’s representations of impotence emblematized not only his own personal afflictions but a greater cultural malaise.

«Vivere da soldato senza essere tale». Gli scritti di guerra di Thomas Mann
Tucci, Francesca
Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy
This essay examines the semantic area linked to military activity and in particular the conditions of the soldier in the essays written by Thomas Mann during the First World War. These reconstructions of a historical theme intermix with contributions about current public affairs, and have as their object the events linked to Germany’s entering the war and the general favour with which this was received. Moreover, warlike metaphors tend to slip comfortably into the profound core of Mann’s writing, since they lend themselves rather effectively to descriptions of the artist’s actual aptitudes and duties.

Die Kritik am romantischen Ideal in E. T. A. Hoffmanns «Der goldene Topf»
Rezai Dubiel, Jasmin Marjam
Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Germany
E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Der Goldene Topf portrays fantasy and the ideal of romantic aestheticism as utopian on a metafictional level. However, another possibility should be considered: the temporary contemplation within poetry compensates for the loss of belief in the poeticization of the world as conceived by Novalis. The artistic entity cannot immerse itself in the romantic ideal. Since the narrator becomes part of the story and a victim of his imagination, the narration presents a critical viewpoint of the concept of genius.

Das Thema “Altern” in Arno Geigers Roman «Alles über Sally»
Dackweiler, Meike
Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany
Alles über Sally (All about Sally) is the fifth novel of the successful Austrian author Arno Geiger. While it was both praised and criticized for being a contemporary adaption of the adultery novel, little importance was attached to the theme of ageing, which pervades the whole novel. Moreover, adulterous female characters over fifty are rare in contemporary German literature. Given these premises, this essay examines the composition of the ageing characters in the novel and provides a discussion of the social construction of images of ageing.

Il mito della “Rauchseele” in «Eli. Ein Mysterienspiel vom Leiden Israels» di Nelly Sachs
Serio, Marco
Università degli Studi di Trento, Italy
This essay investigates the poetic strategies that Nelly Sachs introduces into her lyrical drama Eli in order to solve the problem of the ethical limitations of Holocaust literary representation in the post-Auschwitz world. Sachs rejects Adorno’s famous dictum and voices the “unspeakable” and the “unthinkable” through Romantic themes and the Jewish tradition. The shift from “visible” to “invisible” allows her to elaborate the Holocaust, to preserve collective memory, to confirm the destiny of the Jewish people, and to legitimate the role of literature after Auschwitz as a fusion of word and myth, functional to analyzing reality on a critical level.

Il muro del linguaggio. Echi di Wittgenstein e Lacan in «Spiegelland» di Kurt Drawert
Ribatti, Nicola
Università degli Studi di Siena, Italy
In his essayistic novel Spiegelland. Ein deutsches Monolog (1992), Kurt Drawert engages in an intense criticism of the dictatorship in the former DDR, at fault for having reduced language to a tool for the control of conscience. This article seeks to demonstrate how Drawert’s criticism concerns not only the sphere of language, but also the sphere of the visual. Thus photography, for example, is affected in the same way as language by that “illusion of representation” in which the subject is caged. This article also seeks to show how Drawert’s language and image criticism is inspired by aspects of Lacan’s and Wittgenstein’s lines of thought.

Polemische Transgression. Karl Kraus zwischen Schrift und Aktion
Rose, Dirk
Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany
This essay focuses on the medial transgression from the written word to action in the polemic writings of Karl Kraus. The manifestation of transgression in his polemical writings should be seen as a consequent mode which characterizes his concept of polemics, finally as a permanent excess of its own medial as well as conceptual requirements. In the second part, this essay discusses ethical and/or political problems that result from those modes of transgression, particularly in Kraus’ attitude towards the First World War and the Nazi regime.

Un Woyzeck sui fronti del Novecento. «Eiche und Angora» di Martin Walser
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy
Martin Walser’s play Eiche und Angora (1962) deals with the persistence of totalitarianism-oriented mental structures after the Second World War and the collapse of the Nazi regime. Walser represents political history as strongly opposed to the private sphere of ordinary people. Adjustment to the post-war situation of the Bundesrepublik and continuity with the historical past are seen by Walser as equivalent forms of self-defense against the inhuman attitude of political power.

Frühgealtert und spätgeboren. Richard Schaukals Dialog mit dem Dichterkreis des Jungen Wien
Mitterer, Cornelius
Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Biographie, Austria
This article discusses the Austrian writer Richard Schaukal (1874-1942) and his artistic and personal relationship with the writers of the «Young Vienna» circle. Points of agreement and difference with Hermann Bahr, Karl Kraus, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Arthur Schnitzler are at the centre of the analysis. The parallels with Hofmannsthal’s early work in particular will be shown by way of intertextual comparison. Drawing on these insights, the analysis seeks to situate Schaukal within the broader context of Viennese Modernism (c. 1890-1910).

«Maria Antoniette» di Heinrich Heine: una «Historie» dalla «Matrazengruft»
Morenghi, Erminio
Independent Researcher, Italy
This thematic and stylistic analysis of the poem Marie Antoinette by Heine, one of the Historien taken from the famous Romanzero (1851), seeks to highlight the eeriness of the ancien régime personified by the ghosts of the queen and her ladies in the Tuileries palace after the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. The politically disappointed poet blames the aristocracy for being still bound to the Etiquette and for preventing the necessary social reforms proposed by the prince. For Heine, the light of reason should exorcise the wandering ghosts of a disturbing past.

“Ist es nicht ein finsterer Wald, in den wir gerieten?”. Waldgänge und Waldgänger in Maja Haderlaps Roman «Engel des Vergessens»
Prutti, Brigitte
University of Washington, WA (USA)
This essay examines the literary portrait of the forested Southern Carinthian border region as a place of Austrian Slowenian historical experience and cultural memory in Maja Haderlap’s novel Engel des Vergessens. The autobiographical and documentary novel published in 2011 asks what it means to live on in a landscape contaminated by historical violence. At issue here is the novel’s representation of individual and collective Austrian Slowenian history in its depiction of the narrator’s forest walks as a child and the Carinthian Slowenian partisans’ life in the woods.

Lesebühne Ost. Szene-Literatur zwischen DDR-Vergangenheit und wiedervereinigter Gegenwart
Rota, Andrea
Università degli Studi di Bergamo, Italy
Against the informal backdrop of Berlin public-reading events (Berliner Lesebühnen) self-organised groups of German authors are participating in a literary (sub)culture, which especially since the second half of the 1990s has been flourishing in the booming East of the city, but still deserves to be properly explored. Focussing on Berlin public-reading events, this contribution aims to sketch out an underground literary-scene, in which writers grown up in the former GDR provide an unofficial view on and from (East) Germany.

«Tschuschen» und «Saujuden». Kultureller Identitätswandel in dem Roman «Zwischenstationen» von Vladimir Vertlib
Willeke, Stephanie
Universität Paderborn, Germany
In his writings, Vladimir Vertlib focuses on topics such as being a stranger in a foreign country. In particular, his novel Zwischenstationen shows how binary oppositions like the ownness and otherness, as well as prejudices, have an impact on the identity of individuals. Taking into account theories of space originating from the spatial turn, this essay investigates the ways in which the protagonists of the novel change their identity. It will be argued that binary oppositions are always constructs which have to be critically examined.

Spuren der Antike bei Robert Musil. Zum «Mann ohne Eigenschaften» im transhistorischen Kontext griechischer Philosophie
Hajduk, Stefan
University of Adelaide, Australia
This article focusses on the trains of thought and motifs that link the aesthetic and ethical foundation of The Man Without Qualities with philosophemes of the Greek antiquity. When Musil states that aesthetics is ethics and that everything is moral, he is drawing on classical ideas that converge in the idealistic notion of unity in diversity. The question of another condition is characteristic of the Romantic tradition that Musil continues (while distancing himself from it), but has a much older heritage, that of the philosophy of antiquity.

Die «unerfüllt gebliebene Sehnsucht» der «Lebenskünstlerin» Lina Loos
Pulvirenti, Grazia
Università degli Studi di Catania, Italy
The role Lina Loos had to play in her artistic milieu involved a permanent struggle between her authentic self and the male-dominated society which obliged her to serve as an inspiring “muse”, first of all for her more famous husband Adolf Loos. This contrast was the object of her play Wie man wird, was man ist. This paper will attempt to outline Lina Loos’s struggle to stand as a woman writer in a society which rejected the female creative work, her social engagement during the Second World War and in the following years, as well as all the psychological contrasts and stylistic features characterising her literary and journalistic work.

Hans Blumenbergs “Objet ambigu” und Giorgio Agambens “Dispositiv”. Kongruenz zweier poetologischer Paradigmen in der Sprache der Lyrik
Biasi, Marcella
Independent Researcher, Germany
This article discusses the idea of a specific lyric-theoretical power of language. Through Blumenberg’s pattern of the objet ambigu, it analyzes to what extent the performative character of the word can be seen as an ontological implication of its original linguistic potential. Through Agamben’s concept of the apparatus, it considers the «dispositive» character of the native power of self-determination of the word in the context of absolute semantic ambiguity. This is to clarify the sense in which the word, under precise conditions, is the authentic «power of the figure» and how the «apparatus»-concept allows a deeper understanding of poetry according to the paradigm of ambiguity.

Zwei Räuber. Eine Bemerkung zu Robert Walser und Søren Kierkegaard
Seiffarth, Achim
University College Roosevelt - Middelburg, The Netherlands
Robert Walser’s robber novel is frequently criticized as an inconsistent and tortuous piece of writing lacking in structure. Moving from these premises, most critics adopt a psychological or psychoanalytic interpretation of this work. My aim is to show that by correlating the main theme of the novel with a motif of Kierkegaard’s Repetition it is possible to better explain what happens in Walser’s text. In this perspective, his novel may be seen as a consequential development of a well-known romantic theme: the mirror theme.

Visionen von Natur vor uns. Alfred Ehrhardt fotografiert und filmt Urformen der Natur
Wilke, Sabine
University of Washington, WA (USA)
What did nature look like before it was destroyed by modern civilization? That is a question that was at the center of modernist art photography. It also resonates today in the context of environmental debates. On the example of the art work of Bauhaus photographer and cinematographer Alfred Ehrhardt, the artistic project of portraying nature “before us” is analyzed as an aesthetic project that positions itself before and next to the Anthropocene, i.e., the geological concept that foregrounds a radical interconnectivity between humans and nonhuman nature in our post-industrial era of mankind.

«Die Gegenwart ist nichts als eine Hypothese». Formen und Funktionen von Experimentalität in Robert Musils «Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften»

Based on the notion of experiments as “Experimentalsysteme” (Rheinberger) explicated by recent history of science studies the following paper examines how experiments are conducted in and are relevant to Robert Musil’s modern novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften on a thematic, textual, epistemological and poetological level. Focus areas are representations of different experimental constellations, i.e. scientific, poetic and thought experiments, the relation of experimental literary operations and scientific experimentation as well as Musil’s understanding of essayism as an experimental configuration between science and aesthetics.

Aus dem «Dorfe» in den «Stürmischen Morgen». Zu zwei Liedern aus Wilhelm Müllers und Franz Schuberts «Die Winterreise»
Hillesheim, Jürgen
Universität Augsburg, Germany
Die Winterreise, written by the romantic author Wilhelm Müller and set to music by Franz Schubert, is one of the most important poem cycles of German tradition. Since the second half of the 20th century these texts have been taken out of their context and more and more politically interpreted, that is ideologically instrumentalized. That this leads to misinterpretations is demonstrated with reference to the poems Im Dorfe and Der stürmische Morgen. Here we have to do, not with political beacons, but with the aesthetic realization of a pessimism that influenced significantly the philosophy and literature of the early 19th century.

Gödelmann’s Faustus (1591). Concerning the Fluidity of the Early Transmission of the Adventures of Faustus in Germany
McDonald, William C.
University of Virginia, USA
This article is the first to treat systematically the brief, contemporary references to the Fauststoff in the treatise De magis, veneficis et lamiis (1591) by Johann Georg Gödelmann, best known as a witchcraft theorist. He treats Johann Faustus as a “praedestigiator”, a black magician and trickster who belongs in the company of Simon Magus. Comparing Gödelmann’s versions of the adventures of Faustus with those in the chapbook, Historia von D. Johann Fausten (1587), published in the same city (Frankfurt am Main), one sees that these adventures were in flux in the late sixteenth century.

Der Dichter als Idiot – Zur Poetik des Außenseiters in Botho Strauß’ «Lichter des Toren»
Winkler, Bernhard
Universität Regensburg, Germany
Being an idiot isn’t that bad. Although persons who are called idiots live a life on the margins of society, they possess a special gift of insight and sensitivity, as well as a knowledge of hidden truths and experiences. Strauß revalues the figure of the idiot by approximating it to that of the poet. Both of them use alternative cognitive processes, a vicinity to transcendence and secret lore which is inherent to the solitude they have to bear for their alternative existence. In Lichter des Toren Strauß carries to extremes his thoughts on the figure of the idiot, exposes the roots of the word and introduces a personal poetics of the idiot.

Community of Faithful Dissidents. Representations of Anabaptism in Swiss Historical Fiction by Walter Laedrach and Katharina Zimmermann

University of Colorado Boulder, USA
The twentieth-century Swiss local authors Walter Laedrach and Katharina Zimmermann rediscovered the dark chapter of Swiss history documenting the torture and execution of non-resistant and non-conformist Christians in the Bernese Oberland. The following analysis of the literary representation of these pacifist Anabaptists will identify historiographical sources that served as inspiration to the authors and the contributions their historical novels make in Switzerland’s process of coming to terms with its tragic past.

«Ist Ihnen bekannt, daß sechs Wasserstoffbomben genügen, um die ganze Bundesrepublik in einen Atomsumpf zu verwandeln?». Günther Weisenborns Stücke gegen die nukleare Aufrüstung
Fiandra, Emilia
Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy
The atomic play Atom vor Christus (1952) by the Viennese playwright Kurt Becsi (1920-1988) is one of the very numerous works on the subject of the nuclear threat that appeared in German-speaking countries in the 1950s and ’60s. This article investigates the complex Christian religious discourse that embeds the dramatization of atomic issues and apocalyptic ideas of the End in Becsi’s play. Special focus is given to such aspects as the struggle between generations and, in particular, the conflict between the unscrupulous scientist (and his hubris) and the figure of the repentant bomber pilot that becomes a monk (Science versus love, logic versus Christian grace).

Wissensbearbeitung im Produktionsprozess des zeitgenössischen Dokumentartheaters
Wind, Priscilla
Université de Franche-Comté, France
Documentary theatre aims to portray truth or authenticity. It tries to produce knowledge, though it is rather difficult to assert the authenticity of this knowledge because the sources imply a great deal of subjectivity. It is a medium that asks questions about how to pass on knowledge not only through the body and the voice, but also through the meeting of multiple people and the exchange between the stage and the audience. This study will analyse, through several contemporary documentary plays, how knowledge, and of what kind, can be produced on stage and if there is a particular aesthetics for this production.

«Wenn sich nach dem Werther die Leute totschießen, so ist das Buch gut; wenn sie auf andere schießen, besser». L’arte come pratica di costruzione del futuro in Ludwig Rubiner
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy
Both as essay writer and poet Ludwig Rubiner (1881-1920) focuses on art as a revolutionary practice. He conceives critical understanding of reality as a first step in a radical change of social conditions, which can be seen as the result of an artist’s specific attitude in evoking new worlds. This implies that only a non-realistic art can be politically successful, because it refers to a future horizon without restricting itself to describing the political situation of the time. In this paper, I analyze Rubiner’s strongly utopic art concept involving some typical categories of expressionistic literature like “Geist”, “Gemeinschaft”, “Katastrophe”.

This essay juxtaposes practices of sound storage in a World War I context with the contemporaneous use of sound in Dadaist poems and the ways in which Dadaists reimagine ethnographic discourse from a visual construct into an aural one. By focusing on the change in discursive genre that emerges with war-era attempts at creating a museum of sound, this essay sheds light on the changing place of the Other between national imperatives and colonial possession, as mediated through Dadaist practice.

Eine Provokation und ihre Folgen. Zum “deutschen Trauerspiel” «Die Plebejer proben den Aufstand» von Günter Grass
Sprenger, Karoline
Universität Augsburg, Germany
Die Plebejer proben den Aufstand. Ein deutsches Trauerspiel (1966) by Günter Grass aroused great scandal, because the play denounces the tactics of Bertolt Brecht with regard to the workers’ uprising in East Germany on June 17, 1953. However, Grass always relativized this and claimed to have shown the problematic relationship between artist and politics in general. The present contribution argues that Grass actually attacked frontally none other than Brecht and that he exploited the debate in the leftist student magazine konkret, the West-German mouthpiece of the 1968 revolt.

Das Dritte Reich. Die diskursive Sakralisierung in der NS-Propagandadichtung von Heinrich Anacker
Van Hertbruggen, Anneleen
Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium
The main focus of this essay is the discursive analysis of “Reich” as an article of faith in the poetry volume Die Fanfare. Gedichte der deutschen Erhebung by Heinrich Anacker (1901-1971). Looking back to the original theological foundation of the concept “Third Reich” in connection with the debate about whether National Socialism could be considered as a political religion, “Reich” is described as a possible article of faith of the Nazi creed. In Anacker’s National Socialist biased propaganda poetry, “Reich” appears, in fact, as a sacred and even as a quasi-religious entity.

Die Wiederkehr des Antiken in der Erzählung. Max Weber und Robert Musil
Seiffarth, Achim
Hochschule Fulda, Germany
Max Weber and Robert Musil have shared interests, not only in analyzing the “modern world”. With contemporary philosophy having apparently become merely academic, and narration losing plausibility in history as well as in literature, they both choose the way of essayistic writing in order to substantiate their views. And in their search for a foundation they both go back to ancient philosophy, Weber to Plato and Musil to Plotinus.

Dichtungs-, Kunst- und Künstlertheorie in Ferdinand von Saars lyrischem und erzählerischem Werk
Voß, Torsten
Universität Innsbruck, Austria
This essay deals with the implicit poetical annotations and thoughts in some lyrical and narrative works of Ferdinand von Saar. His theoretical statements about art, literature or the position of artists and writers in modern society are few in number. So it is important to search in his literary works for some indication of his attitude towards poetical theory. This paper includes poems and so-called artist novels, like Für den Leiermann, Tambi and Sühnefall. These texts demonstrate the liminal position of Ferdinand von Saar between tradition and modernity and his own theoretical reflections about it.

Baudelaires «Les Phares» und Nietzsches Gedicht «Das Feuerzeichen» aus dem Zyklus «Dithyramben des Dionysos»
Di Noi, Barbara
Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy
This essay reflects on the aesthetic and rhetorical strategies used by Nietzsche and Baudelaire in two poems, which at first glance scarcely show any resemblance. The poems are Baudelaire’s Les Phares and Nietzsche’s Feuerzeichen from the late Dithyramben. In both cases the central image of the Lighthouse and the Symbol of Light refer to the difficult relationship of the “Great Man” to the crowd; but they are also linked to the idea that “Great Men” follow their destiny of loneliness and are like stars, whose light will not be seen by others until after their death.

Beckett, Bernhard, Dante: Intertextuelle Referenzen in Lilian Faschingers «Magdalena Sünderin»
Ketterl, Simone
Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Germany
The prose of the Carinthian writer Lilian Faschinger features complex intertextual networks. By integrating as well as interweaving quotations and motives from Samuel Beckett’s Malone Dies, Thomas Bernhard’s Frost and Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia, her picaresque novel Magdalena Sünderin does more than merely engage in postmodern playfulness. This article investigates how Faschinger’s text makes use of its intertextual elements to ridicule the literary canon. It also poses the question whether this can be interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek feminist act against male domination in the literary scene as such.

Searching for Harmonia. «Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus» and Hungarian Anabaptists
Jany, Berit
University of Colorado Boulder, USA
In Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus (1668) Grimmelshausen depicts the Hungarian Hutterites as an ideal society, focusing predominantly on the ethics and social structure of this communal branch of Anabaptism. In this critical reading, I explore how Grimmelshausen fictionalized the religious minority, its commitment to particular social structures and ethical aspects, and its separation from society. As part of this analysis, the study investigates which social and religious principles drawn from polemical accounts and contemporary sources influence and counter the minority’s image as an ideal society and how this image of the religious group supports the novel’s notion of utopia.

Haunted Identity. Melancholie und Dissoziation als Strategien der Dekonstruktion des Ich in Helmut Kraussers «Schmerznovelle»
Brucher, Rosemarie
Kunstuniversität Graz, Austria
Krausser’s texts play repeatedly with the radical disintegration of identity. In «Schmerznovelle» (2001) he describes the encounter between Johanna Palm, who suffers from a split personality, and the narrator, a psychiatrist with the obsessive wish to cure her. As a result of this process, their ideas of self-identity increasingly dissipate. This article investigates the disintegration of the self against the backdrop of the psychological concepts of melancholia and dissociation. The productive conjunction that allows Krausser to question the idea of stable identity altogether is analysed with the help of the theories of Freud, Žižek and Agamben.

“Trotzdem! Ein gutes Land” (?). Marianne Fritz’ «Dessen Sprache du nicht verstehst» als radikalste Liquidation des habsburgischen Mythos am Leitfaden seiner Sprechakte
Schmutzer, Lukas
Universität Wien, Austria
This paper explores how Marianne Fritz’s novel Dessen Sprache du nicht verstehst incorporates its sources. On the one hand it traces the many contexts of the novel’s title, which cites Deuteronomy, the fifth Book of Moses. At the same time it interrogates the usage of a quote by Franz Grillparzer, «Es ist ein gutes Land» («It is a good land»), and how it communicates with other quotes within the novel. Thereby the essay develops a unique way of reading the novel, which many still judge to be unreadable.

«Pfleget den Fremdenverkehr!» Karl Kraus e la propaganda d’incentivo al turismo
Campobasso, Maria Giovanna
Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy
This study explores Karl Kraus’ case against ministerial incentives to promote tourism. Kraus covers the overlap between tourism and war propaganda, treating an apparently insignificant cultural phenomenon as a symptom of collective spiritual decay. As Kraus sees it, the governmental push to cultivate tourism serves as a diversion for Austrians amid the economic uncertainty brought on by the Great War. This essay examines instances of the theme in the Buchausgabe (1926) of the drama Die Letzten Tage der Menschheit, together with a selection of articles and glosses from Die Fackel (1899-1936).

Hybride Konstruktionen als identitätsstiftende Verortung in Vladimir Vertlibs Roman «Viktor hilft»
Glišič, Miša
Independent Researcher, Slovenia
In Vladimir Vertlib’s novel Viktor hilft reinventing identity, linguistic and cultural hybridization processes as well as re-localizations can be explained. The author describes polyphonic situations in the cross-cultural narrative process and indirectly pluralizes the concept of culture, advocating a transcultural understanding of modern cultures. The identity of literary figures, which require the foil of otherness, constructs itself in an overarching field of cultures. The discourse about the other shapes their own self-image.

«Die Ehre bleibt allein des Herzens Eigenthum». La definizione del carattere tragico nella teoria estetica e nella scrittura drammatica di Johann Elias Schlegel
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy
Johann Elias Schlegel’s writing for the theatre always pairs up with theoretical reflection. In his essays, Schlegel often takes an original stance with respect to his background as a member of the Gottsched circle. At no time does he ever set aside the mimetic principle; instead, he deploys it on behalf of an aesthetic of affects firmly anchored to a lucid understanding of the political and social situation surrounding the reception of his work. This study mainly focuses on how this intertwining finds expression in his essays and in his major tragedy Canut (1746).

Inhabiting a Time before Time. Freud’s Concept of Trauma as a Psychoanalytical Figure of Thought
Rabelhofer, Bettina
Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Austria
At present the term ‘trauma’ seems to be booming as a pattern of cultural interpretation. It connects discourses about medicine, psychoanalysis, art and literary theory, and social history. Today the ruptures and aporias of understanding, representation, communicability and referentiality are discussed in post-structuralist theories of meaning, but it was Freud who created for the first time a readable text about how the repetitious structure of trauma in its paradoxical temporality – the effect stands in as its cause – works as a missed experience at the interface of lives and texts.

«Verweile nicht bei den Hellenen, vernimm dich zu Byzanz». Facetten der Griechenlandsehnsucht in deutschsprachigen literarischen Reiseberichten des 19. und angehenden 20. Jahrhunderts
Rassidakis, Alexandra
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Austrian and German intellectuals were often disappointed when visiting contemporary Greece. This article examines various aspects of this tension between expectation and disappointment, as recorded in travel literature dating from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. It focuses on the nostalgia for Ancient Greece and its disillusionment due to the immense temporal distance. It also examines the portrayal of the landscape as a guarantee of continuity, in order to overcome this disappointment. To this Ancient-centered nostalgia this article juxtaposes one of a different kind, this time related to the Byzantine tradition. This nostalgia can be found in the German and Austrian travel literature that describes visits to Greek monasteries, especially on the Athos peninsula, and reaches its peak in the mystical overtones of travellers’ accounts in the twentieth century.

«Was! um eines Wortes willen?». Hölderlin, Celan e la cesura tra poesia e ‘praxis’ nella storia
Polledri, Elena
Università degli Studi di Udine, Italy
The purpose of this article is to shed light on the complex relationship between poetry and praxis, which Hölderlin and Celan dealt with, respectively, in the tragedy Der Tod des Empedokles and in the poem Tübingen Jänner and, further, to show how the two poets were driven by the urge to reflect on the role of the poet in history. In the tragedy Der Tod des Empedokles, Hölderlin still seems to believe in the power of the poetic word, but he soon lost this faith and did not finish his drama. In Paul Celan’s poem Tübingen Jänner, Hölderlin becomes the symbol of a poetry which the world cannot understand any more. The obscure words «Pallaksch. Pallaksch», which the poet repeated in front of his visitors in the tower on the Neckar, suggest the impossible communication between poet and society and the caesura between the poetic word and historical praxis.

Between Fate and Skill. Translating Hölderlin’s Term “Geschik”
Lewis, Charles
Independent Researcher
In this essay I revisit a vexed question, namely how to translate the term “Geschik” in Hölderlin’s theoretical writings. There are two places where its interpretation is contentious: in a passage from the Anmerkungen zur Antigonä, and in the first letter to Böhlendorff. In his writings he frequently uses the term to mean “fate”, but this is not an invariable rule. Depending upon the context, other interpretations (for instance “skill”) cannot always be excluded. It is also clear that Hölderlin enjoys playing on the etymological and phonetic relations between this and cognate expressions.

«Nun also die Krähen». Krähen-Narrationen und -Narrative bei Monika Maron
Klingenböck, Ursula
Universität Wien, Austria
This article focuses on Monika Maron’s Krähengekrächz (2016) and Munin oder Chaos im Kopf (2018). Adopting the approach of Literary Animal Studies, it primarily analyses the diegetic creature “crow”: the species “crow” as well as its individual exponent Munin, which is anthropomorphized, disposes of speech and agency and represents not just a narrated “object” but a narrating “subject”. Subsequently, Maron’s crow-narrations, concretizations of a metanarration / a (cultural) narrative “crow”, are shaped in their relationship to fictional (literature) and factual (popular science) narratives of the crow and evaluated on their importance for current animal-discourses.

«Machen Sie mich nicht reich. Geben Sie mir nur so viel, als man braucht, wenn man nicht gehorchen, und nicht befehlen will». Strategie del possesso nella «Betschwester» di Christian Fürchtegott Gellert
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, Italy
As in all Gellert’s comedies, the characters of the The Prayer Sister (1745) aspire to both material well-being and an ideal spiritual happiness. The impulse to possession, which encompasses the sphere of reality as well as that of the symbolic, is an ambivalent, contradictory force. The aim of self-affirmation through wealth is coherent with bourgeois dynamism. The consequent exposure to the loss of a moral compass, however, corresponds to a drainage of the vital force which impels the logic of wish. This study deals with these themes both in Gellert’s theatre and in his essays.

Olfactory Experiences and an Unknown Force in Patrick Süskind’s «Das Parfum: Die Geschichte eines Mörders»
Shu-Ting Kao, Justine
Tamkang University, Taiwan
Patrick Süskind’s Das Parfum: Die Geschichte eines Mörders presents a sort of Janus-figure, gazing backwards toward the primitive form of life (Grenouille’s Romantic deliverance) and forward toward an Enlightenment anthropocentric mechanism (an allusion to negative aesthetics) which reveals the formation and dissolution of political power through the olfactory experiences of the protagonist. In other words, it concerns the two worlds between which there is an unknown force transforming all olfactory manipulation/experimentation into nothingness: as men scheme their evil business through objects or scents, a greater force then deconstructs those schemes.

Intertext als Gedenken. Herta Müllers Roman «Der Fuchs war damals schon der Jäger» in Konstellation mit Texten von Günter Grass
Leipelt-Tsai, Monika
National Chengchi University, Taiwan
This article traces intertextual references in Herta Müller’s 1992 novel Even back then, the Fox was the Hunter with Günter Grass’s texts as a dialogical form of remembrance. In conjunction with an excerpt from Günter Grass’s Peeling the Onion, selected passages are examined to show how these texts articulate in exemplary manner a remembrance of experiences of dictatorship, war, and National Socialism. Herta Müller’s and Günter Grass’s texts discuss contemporary historical “collective events” in a special literary conjunction of fiction and memory distinguished from the historical discourse which invokes reality.

Antigone come problema. Brecht e la critica di un mito troppo moderno
Massalongo, Milena
Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy
Antigone’s myth seems to be one of the few ancient ones to have become in every way a myth in the modern sense: a reference image functioning as a means of rapid identification and as a flag of shared values. Antigone ended up becoming for us the myth of the Human against the political dimension, which is now being instinctively reduced to the constitutive violence of all power. By first concentrating on some critical moments of Sophocles’ version, and then on some often neglected aspects of the version Brecht wrote in 1947, the following notes attempt to deconstruct this both on stage and in its reception within the dominant social imaginary. Although Brecht’s Antigone is usually staged in line with this imaginary, it seems to offer, rather more than a correction or an update of Sophocles’ text, an already critical counterpart to our contemporary reception of its underlying myth.

Abenteuer Männlichkeit. Adoleszenz in Wolfgang Herrndorfs Roman «Tschick»
Krammer, Stefan
Universität Wien, Austria
This article deals with literary constructions of masculinity in Wolfgang Herrndorf’s novel Tschick. The focus is on male adolescence as represented by the characters in the text. The study is guided by the question of how the male socialisation of adolescents is narrated in the novel. Themes such as the search for identity, friendship, sexuality and being an outsider are addressed. The analysis is based on theoretical perspectives offered by masculinity studies, intersectional approaches of identity research as well as genre-related reflections on young adult fiction.

Il demiurgo è ibrido, ovvero ermafrodita. Letture postasburgica e postcoloniale di «Die andere Seite» di Alfred Kubin
Fanetti, Giulia
Università di Bologna, Italy
The Other Side narrates the story of an anachronistic regime built up in Asia with remains of Decadent Europe. Before its collapse, due to the impossibility of existing against history and nature, the narrator concludes: «The demiurge is a hybrid». This paper studies the identity of the demiurge in order to clarify the meaning of this alienating statement. In doing so, it recognizes that the extraordinary regime reflects many features of the Habsburg myth; and also, that as an “experiment of Austria” it needs to take place elsewhere, where the western repressed dreams of power can be fulfilled: in a colony.

«Wir haben jetzt die Demokratie, das ist kompliziert genug». Zur Krise demokratischer Systeme und Auflösung des Politischen in «Munin oder Chaos im Kopf» von Monika Maron
Gheri, Paola
Università degli Studi di Salerno, Italy
In the light of the profound changes that have affected both the political scenario and the political role and forms of engagement of literature over the past thirty years, Monika Maron’s novel Munin oder Chaos im Kopf (2018) seems particularly topical. If analysed through Hannah Arendt’s remarks on the nature of politics and Zygmunt Bauman’s thoughts on our “besieged” society, the narrator’s shocking experience can be seen as both the consequence and the reflection of a failure of our democratic systems, as well as of our traditional idea of politics itself.

«Freilich ist Freundschaft wahre Heimat». Il carteggio di Stefan Zweig e Joseph Roth come patria spirituale
Capovilla, Erika
Università degli Studi di Udine, Italy
This article attempts to explore the intimate yet complicated friendship between Stefan Zweig and Joseph Roth through their exchange of letters. Their personal correspondence has always been regarded as a valuable resource for interpreting their works and for documenting the life of intellectuals during the National Socialist period. However, the relevance of their correspondence does not lie only in its literary and historical testimony, since it is also strictly related to its auto/biographical aspects. Adopting this perspective, the article offers a reading of the letters both as an autobiographical portrait of Zweig and Roth and as a distant narrative of their friendship, conceived as the only possible homeland for the two writers in exile.

Ein Schlachtfeld der Zuschreibung von Autorschaft. Musils propagandistische Beiträge in der Frontzeitung «Heimat» (1918)

Università degli Studi di Verona, Italy
This study focuses on Musil’s contributions to Heimat, a propaganda newspaper published by the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier during the last months of World War I. As the authorship of the Heimat articles is controversial, we performed a series of stylometric analyses, which allowed us to attribute ten texts to the Austrian writer. Our approach introduces new elements and data into the debate on authorship, thus opening a productive dialogue between computational, archival and stylistic research.

National Philology, Politics and Science. Notes on the birth of Germanistics out of the spirit of the nineteenth century
Clara, Fernando
Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal
This article focuses on the nationalistic turn that swept across the political and cultural life of nineteenth century Germany by looking into two events that are seldom brought together: the Germanists’ Assembly in Frankfurt, in 1846, and Marx and Engels’ Manifesto of the Communist Party, published just two years later. It explores the tension between nationalism and internationalism that runs through both events and that is still vividly present in our contemporary, after all, not so «Postnational Constellation».

Kunst als (botanisches) Studium der Natur? Bemerkungen zu Goethes Schrift «Einfache Nachahmung der Natur, Manier, Stil»

Independent researcher, Halle (Saale), Germany
Goethe’s essay Einfache Nachahmung der Natur, Manier, Stil is steeped in an analogy: The life science of botany serves as an aesthetic foil, botany and art are set in parallel – to show how Goethe develops this, and what it implies, is the aim of this paper.

Con un colpo di spugna e sapone “Gallseife”. La rielaborazione del passato nazionalsocialista in «Heimat» di Nora Krug
Goggio, Alessandra
Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy
This paper intends to show how and to what extent the practices of postmemory (Hirsch) and “cumulative heroization” (Welzer), which are typical of the so-called generation of grandchildren in Germany, are embedded in Nora Krug’s graphic novel Heimat. Ein deutsches Familienalbum [Heimat. A German Family Album] (2018). It will be shown how these practices contribute to creating a work that in the end idealizes the German and family (Nazi) past rather than coming to terms with it, thus also reiterating a Germano-centric concept of Heimat.

Jenseits von Textbeziehungen. Paul Celan bei Yoko Tawada
Russo, Eriberto
Università degli Studi di Messina, Italy
This article aims at highlighting the metatextual relationships between the works of Yoko Tawada and Paul Celan. The analysis concentrates on Das Tor des Übersetzers oder Celan liest Japanisch and Paul Celan und der chinesische Engel and is carried out in the light of transtextual practices, starting from theoretical premises related to the act of reading (symptomatic reading – surface reading) and including the dimension of transculturality. The encounter between Tawada and Celan generates a multi-faceted textual space, in which texts from different cultures, having the German language as a common denominator, enter into dialogue with each other.

Un malinconico nella commedia gottschediana. «Der Hypochondrist» di Theodor Johann Quistorp
Pirro, Maurizio
Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy
Theodor Johann Quistorp was among the regular contributors to Gottsched’s Deutsche Schaubühne (1741-1745). In addition to his published works as a playwright, he tried his hand at writing non-fiction, taking a stand against Baumgarten’s theories, and engaging in a heated debate with Georg Friedrich Meier. Quistorp’s comedies are actually based on a conception of the comic effect that is far removed from Gottschedian rationalism. In his Hypochondrist (1745), melancholy and depression are not represented as evil and morally deviant, but as a physiological expression of human nature, which is to be linked to all other aspects of individual identity.

«The way to the head must be opened through the heart». Enlightenment and Herzensbildung in Schiller
Alves, Alexandre
Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Neuhaus, Till
Universität Bielefeld, Germany
The following paper discusses Schiller’s interpretation of the German concept of Bildung, which appears to be a central term in Germany’s culture, especially (but not limited to) the educational realm. As Bildung underwent massive transformations and has been re-interpreted multiple times throughout German history, this paper will start with a definitory exercise trying to organize the dynamics surrounding the term. Secondly, a two-fold historical context – firstly regarding the wider political and social dynamics of the time and secondly, a more biographical approach focusing on Schiller – will be provided. These contextualizing efforts will be succeeded by elaborations on Schiller’s concept of Herzensbildung. The paper closes with a summary of key insights and further potential endeavors.

Carducci e il mondo tedesco. Bilanci e prospettive
Cordibella, Giovanna
Universität Bern, Switzerland
The essay takes a systematic look at some perspectives on the study of Giosue Carducci’s relations with German culture, offering a review of the research until today, examples of case studies, and a reflection on possible future research perspectives. Among the various areas addressed is that of the study of Carducci’s translations from German, with remarks on Carducci’s role in the transfer processes between Italy and Germany. Among other things, emphasis is given to the relevance of investigations into translations not yet published in the National Edition of Carducci’s Works. The last paragraph of the essay gives an account of a first census of Carducci’s autographs that have become part of German, Austrian and Swiss collections. In particular, prominence is given to autographs now preserved at the Fondation Martin Bodmer (Cologny, Genève): a manuscript of the ode Su Monte Mario (whose traces had been completely lost) and a still-unknown autograph of the poem Per la proclamazione del regno d’Italia.

Il potere come dimensione politica e antropologica nel romanzo «Cox oder Der Lauf der Zeit» (2016) di Christoph Ransmayr
Esposito, Gianluca
Università degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II", Italy
The essay analyses the characterisation of power in Christoph Ransmayr’s novel Cox oder Der Lauf der Zeit. Specifically, power is analysed on its political level, with the social implications that it necessarily entails on both the human and personal level, showing the individual in charge locked in the solitude of his distance from others; and on its gender level, which is expressed in the novel by the subjugation of the female to the male. In conclusion, nature and time in the novel are highlighted in their function as obstacles to limitless power.

Stefan Zweig’s Narratives of Migration and Emigration
Szabó, László V.
University of Pannonia at Veszprém, Hungary
Stefan Zweig’s relation to the phenomenon of migration is indeed a complicated issue, which can be approached from at least three perspectives. Firstly, there is the biographic aspect: as one of the major representatives of the German exile literature (Exilliteratur), Zweig has one of the most dramatic biographies among the German authors in the 20th century, including his emigration from Austria to England and New York, then to South America, where (in Petrópolis near Rio de Janeiro) he died in February 1942. Secondly, migration is present in his fictional works, such as the short stories Schachnovelle or Incident on Lake Geneva. Thirdly, Zweig published, a year before his death, his book Brazil, Land of the Future, which, lacking fictitious elements, but including biographic ones, basically summarizes the history (also immigration-history) of Brazil and the main cultural features of his host country. Accordingly, the following paper is a brief analysis of three possible dimensions of migration in Stefan Zweig: biographic migration, including his voluntary and, later, his forced migration, finally fictional migration, i.e. migration as a subject of his works.

«Von deutscher Baukunst» di Goethe, agli albori della “Geniezeit” nel segno dell’architettura gotica tedesca
Morenghi, Erminio
Independent Researcher, Italy
Through an analysis of Goethe’s essay «Von deutscher Baukunst» this study intends to highlight the programatic value of the same for the first authentically German cultural movement, i.e. the «Storm and Stress». The paradigmatic figure of Erwin von Steinbach, the ingenious architect of Strasbourg Cathedral, sympathetically overshadows that of the medieval architect Eudes de Montreuil, whose re-evaluation is due to André Thevet from a patriotic and idealized Renaissance point of view. This is a curious parallelism in the name of creative genius and it represents the starting point of an important process that was to lead to a German aesthetic and literary renewal intended to overcome foreign models, especially French, and also to a re-evaluation of Gothic architecture in a patriotic and nationalist key.
