The 155 scenes of Fritz Hochwälder’s posthumous novel group around one central idea: each of the characters expects a final decision from the coming Thursday. What was read as a loosely connected series of expressionistic short scenes reveals itself as a carefully constructed whole. The narrative cement is provided by erotic relationships, by the visualization of metropolitan patterns of motion, and by a tightly woven texture of motives. Through emotional and economic treason, Hochwälder puts Schnitzler’s language of love in the mouths of characters from Horváth’s narrative worlds, and he exploits an up to now overlooked criminal plot.

Eva Rossmann’s mystery novel Russen kommen, the tenth in a popular series, takes up a hot topic in Austria’s tourism industry: the tensions surrounding the recent influx of newly rich Russian visitors. This article uses Rossmann’s mystery as a case study to examine the impact of global culture and transnational investments on Austrian society. Trapped between provincialism and globalization, Austrians are forced to revisit old fears and find new ways of dealing with contemporary challenges. Due to its wide appeal, popular culture can lead the way in these negotiations.

This essay investigates the constellations of “double” in Meyrink’s novel Der Golem to the extent that the Golem derives its terror not from something alien or unknown but from something strangely familiar, which defeats our efforts to separate ourselves from it. According to this theory, the Golem turns out to be both the product of a psychic dissociation of the main character, due to a comeback of his “removed past” induced by hypnosis, and the Jewish ghetto’s spirit brought to life by the suffering that its inhabitants have endured over the centuries. This essay also focuses on Pernath’s process of initiation, which aims at the conquest of his cultural memory.

Thomas Bernhard reflects in his posthumously published story collection Meine Preise the most important of his many literary awards, which were often associated with public scandals. This essay examines the mechanisms of authorship and self-stylization in the stories concerning the prizes received, shows the conglomeration of reality and fiction which characterizes his late work and offers a compact, interpretative survey of Bernhard’s prose volume in the light of his career in the literary field.

Hatte Leutnant Gustl Hunger? Einige späte Bemerkungen zur Entstehung des inneren Monologs bei Arthur Schnitzler und Knut Hamsun

Arthur Schnitzler’s Leutnant Gustl is regarded as the first instance of interior monologue in German-language literature. According to the general opinion, Edouard Dujardin, who is widely regarded as the “inventor” of the interior monologue, gave Schnitzler the narratological inspiration for his famous text. But, as will be shown by the following comparative analysis, Knut Hamsun’s novel Hunger plays, in fact, a significant role in the development of the interior monologue in the literature around the turn of the century, especially thanks to its narrative techniques.

The following essay explores the theme of remembrance as a question of identity in Doron Rabinovici’s novel Suche nach M. The Austria Jewish author concentrates on the quest for self-determination through various means, which are determined by generational differences. While the generation of survivors sees remembrance of the Holocaust as a moment of silence, their children commemorate it through masquerades or carnivals. Rabinovici’s novel, with its emphasis on a collective search for identity, is an exemplary contributionto Holocaust literature as a re-elaboration of Jewish cultural biblical tradition.

Elfriede Jelinek’s dramas focus on the power of mental images. Her “language surfaces” describe spaces of ideas which are created by associations und amalgams. These are hybrid intellectual places, where those who were driven out from history try to come back. This theatrical aesthetics evolves thanks to circumlocutions around a symbolic und concrete «lieu de mémoire» (Pierre Nora): Auschwitz. Elfriede Jelinek uses the ancient “method of loci” to question the link between theatre and “lieu de mémoire”, while building up intellectual places very similar to contemporary memorials.

The essay’s introduction examines the importance of Italy for Josef Winkler and puts the novella «Natura morta» in context with his oeuvre. The subsequent analysis of the text highlights the technique used by the author, which shows similarities with the process of film shooting. The narrator’s eye follows the main character like a movie camera and is focused on numerous details as if it were zooming on them. In this process, while advancing the novella’s plot, the author paints a colorful portrait of Rome, bringing the city tolife like a baroque still life.

Stauffer-Bern’s biography by Otto Brahm can be regarded as an important source for Titorelli, the painter in Kafka’s novel Der Prozeß. The way in which Kafka used this source recalls the idea of “lethetic Reading”, which Clayton Koelb introduces in order to explain the relationship between Kafka’s text Das Schweigen der Sirenen and Homer’s episode in The Odyssey. Although Kafka may have used Stauffer-Bern as a basis for his own creation, he used only a few of the details he found in Brahm’s biography. The importance of this source can then be appreciated only if we consider the story of Stauffer as the missing link between Titorelli and Kafka’s later creation of Gracchus.

By now diverse movements of the 1960s such as the «Viennese Actionism» and predecessors (in the broadest sense) like the «literarische cabarets» of the so called «Wiener Gruppe» in 1958/59 are well documented and established in Austria’s cultural history. Other groups, art performances and happenings seem to be of marginal historical significance, probably because no chronicler has defined their sphere of influence. This essay investigates action theatre groups, happenings and similar movements initiated by the Austrian poets Wolfgang Bauer and Joe Berger in the 1960s and 1970s and points out their historical relevance.

Ruth Klüger’s German and English memoirs provide a unique opportunity to consider intersections between memory, survival, and self-translation. A Benjaminian interpretation of Klüger’s memoirs, weiter leben: Eine Jugend (1992) and Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (2001), addresses the question of what meanings accrue to survival as it unfolds over 50 years and in two memoirs and languages. Echoing the ethical interventions articulated by Benjamin in «The Task of the Translator», I identify the ways in which Still Alive asserts itself as a translation.

This essay focuses on two contemporary poems and illustrates both the possibilities and the difficulties of a scholarly reading. Since both poems resist a hermeneutic approach, the essay combines a structural analysis with different poststructural perspectives in the light of concepts proposed by scholars like Derrida, Lacan and Foucault. Instead of trying to understand the “meaning” of the texts, this essay describes the poetic strategies the poems use to evoke an atmosphere of wideness and permeability (Waterhouse) and to create an autonomous poetic reality beyond linguistic standards and logical norms (Egger).

Robert Musil’s 1937 address «Über die Dummheit» navigated a challenging subject in a treacherous climate for free speech and simultaneously affirmed Musil’s conception of the necessary symbiosis of aesthetics and ethics. This paper argues for a reading of the address and its preparatory notes wherein Musil’s gendered «Stupidity» (Die Dummheit) represents the ethical role of the artist, as poetic, non-conscripted voice – and, thus, of Musil himself – in a period of totalitarian brutality and linear «final solutions».

Drawing on the concept of contingency this paper aims at analyzing Ransmayr’s concept of fictional and historiographical narrative as it is formulated in his first novel and later poetological texts. Ransmayr’s “geographical poetics” is also explored. In his text Geständnisse eines Touristen (2004) Ransmayr describes the process of writing by developing a whole network of geographical metaphors. These can be read in connection to Die Schrecken des Eises und der Finsternis, which, as a novel about travel and writing, seems to be an important resource for Ransmayr’s later theoretical text.

This article highlights the hitherto neglected significance of the small market town, and erstwhile spa resort, of Hinterbrühl in Lower Austria to Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s life and work. This discussion is set in a cultural-historical context of Hinterbrühl’s function as a place of encounter in the golden age of the spa resort. The article traces the lasting influence of Hinterbrühl in Hofmannsthal’s oeuvre, whether this be through the people he met there, as evidenced by the fragment Silvia im “Stern”, or in the sublimation of the Lower Austrian landscape in the enigmatic Das Märchen der 672. Nacht.

Hofmannsthal’s play «Elektra» aroused controversial reactions when it appeared in 1903: on the one hand, great enthusiasm, on the other hand irritation and hostility towards its undoubted “modernity”. This essay highlights some scarcely known aspects of the context in which the play came into being, focusing particularly on its relationship with the Sophoclean subtext and Hofmannsthal’s coeval and later poetical works, as well as with D’Annunzio’s drama «La città morta», performed in Vienna in 1902 and 1903 with Eleonora Duse in the main role.

This article addresses the relation of Zerreißprobe (1970), the last performance work of the Viennese Actionist Günter Brus, to the tradition of Christian self-sacrifice. Three aspects of this relation are given particular attention: the aestheticization of suffering, the representative function of sacrifice and the distinction between the dependent body and the postulate of free will.

In their texts Ilse Aichinger and Konstantinos Kavafis adopt a perspective from which the conceptions of identity and otherness can be questioned and their interrelationship reconsidered. The binary opposition between “Us” and the “Other” is thus undermined and its dimension as a discursive construction becomes apparent. Both Aichinger and Kavafis do not focus on the “Other” when writing about “Barbarians”; they rather question the conception of “Us”. The subversive value of these texts lies in this very questioning of a homogeneous and clearly drawn conception of identity.

In spite of its title, the main viewpoint in Horváth’s well-known novel Jugend ohne Gott (1937, Youth without God) belongs to the figure of the teacher, who struggles with God and with his own conscience. This essay raises some apparently unorthodox questions, which might, however, open the way for new interpretations of the novel.

This essay is a reading of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Stunden-Buch, particularly the first book, «Das Buch vom mönchischem Leben» from 1905. Throughout the essay, I develop the question of what prayer means in this cycle of poems, and the relationship of prayer to poetry in general. I argue that Rilke surpasses the usual limitations of language, using poetic techniques that instead of merely indicating objects in the world, have the ability to speak things into being. Furthermore, I argue that Rilke uses language as a protective layer that allows one to transform oneself and face a world that is increasingly hostile to poetic sensibility.

The assumption this article is based on is that guilt is perhaps the most important theme in Alois Hotschnig’s writing. This article therefore aims at analyzing Hotschnig’s focus on the theme of guilt in his novels. Three examples of Hotschnig’s prose work serve as case studies: his debut Aus, and the two novels Leonardos Hände, and Ludwigs Zimmer. Since guilt seems to be a very important topic in the Austrian literary tradition, this article also tries to establish whether and how Hotschnig takes up this grand Austrian tradition of writing about guilt.

The crisis of substance and the difficulty of making decisions are fundamental cores in Musil’s conception of the subject. In The Man Without Qualities subjectivity is the consequence of a precise ontology which deconstructs, in the manner of Mach, the very structure of reality. But Musil is not Mach, and he does not merely translate his categories into literature. There is a philosophical originality in his thought revealing a design in which the dissolution of substance and the unsaveability of the ego turn into the development of a paralysing “sense of possibility”. This essay restores an image of Musil fascinated by the theme of the undecidable, but also an acute critic of all the forms of ethical-political decisionism.

This is a comparative reading of Die Voest-Kinder (2011) by E. Reichart and Der Sommer hat lange auf sich warten lassen (2013) by M. Breznik. Both novels participate in a recent trend in Austrian and German contemporary literature; they explore how history, primarily family history, is passed on in a trans-generational perspective: as transmitted silence. It is here that we find the origin of traumas in life and in these two novels, not only for those directly affected by the traumatic events, but also for the following generations. Traumatic experiences are transmitted by what S. Weigel, based on the psychoanalyst H. Faimberg, describes as «telescoping».

In Tod des Tizian (1892) the painted image and its verbal evocation carry out an important function of poetics. In this verse play, Titian’s last painting offers a new representation perspective, which to a certain extent invalidates his previous production. Hofmannsthal here deals with a theme deeply rooted in his aesthetic program. The impulse towards a form supported by a sort of reciprocal strengthening of life and art takes on an eminently ethic configuration in which the aesthetic individual rediscovers his specific duty.

Elfriede Jelineks postdramatic drama Death and the Maiden I represents a feminist revision of the fairy tale Snow White by the Brothers Grimm. Jelinek applies the ideologically and patriarchally loaded medium “fairy tale” to develop a highly differentiated feminist criticism on Western philosophy. Thus, this adaption has to be put in the context of the pre-existing intertext by Brothers Grimm, feminist literary criticism and deconstruction. This essay examines where and how Jelinek instrumentalizes and modifies popular fairy tale motifs in order to create a multi-layered criticism of ontological gender paradigms, patriarchal structures in philosphical thinking, and ideals of beauty.

Theodor Däubler spent a long period in Florence. His participation in the Futurist evenings is a recurrent theme in his letters to his friend Arthur Moeller van der Bruck, in which he also expresses his views on Marinetti, his admiration for the poet Italo Tavolato and for Aldo Palazzeschi (whose poems he later translated) and his recurring thoughts about Trieste. Däubler left Florence in 1914. His departure from Italy certainly represented a gradual (or maybe abrupt) detachment from this Futurist experience, a reality which he had lived and shared but never entirely embraced.

In their novels Radetzkymarsch and Die Standarte Joseph Roth and Alexander Lernet-Holenia worked out the elements of military codes, myths and pictures in a critical perspective. They also developed a very melancholy view on past literary and historical imaginations of officers in the final decade of the k.u.k.-monarchy. Both authors interpret the role and the function of the imperial officer as a way of resistance against the change of paradigms, thought and discourse at the beginning of the First World War. Because of this strategy of compensation, it is possible to recognize the different metaphorical acts to create the officer’s identity as a fiction.

Short stories like Doktor Gräsler Badearzt, Casanova Heimfahrt, Traumnovelle, Spiel im Morgengrauen and cinematographic adaptations like the ones by Roberto Faenza (1990), Edouard Niermans (1992), Mario Bianchi (1989) and Götz Spielmann (2001) show various examples of female and male imaginative sexual/gender identity: strong emancipated women, weak and subordinated men and ambiguous beings like the chameleon couple Leopoldine/Willi Kasda. In these contexts literature and film no longer define the female imaginative construction as a product of male imagination, but rather as a progressive female effort to become independent from traditional male stereotypes.

In Ludwig Wittgensteins’ Philosophical Investigations, physiognomy is used as a metaphor for the impenetrable boundary between the inner character and the outside appearance of language. In his novel Correction Thomas Bernhard confronts this concept of impenetrability with a specific production of architectural space. His protagonist Roithamer is consciously fighting against Wittgensteins boundaries of what is sayable. Both texts reflect the end of the long debates about physiognomics by reconsidering physiognomic thought as an aporetic but still productive hermeneutic tool.

The atomic play Atom vor Christus (1952) by the Viennese playwright Kurt Becsi (1920-1988) is one of the very numerous works on the subject of the nuclear threat that appeared in German-speaking countries in the 1950s and ’60s. This article investigates the complex Christian religious discourse that embeds the dramatization of atomic issues and apocalyptic ideas of the End in Becsi’s play. Special focus is given to such aspects as the struggle between generations and, in particular, the conflict between the unscrupulous scientist (and his hubris) and the figure of the repentant bomber pilot that becomes a monk (Science versus love, logic versus Christian grace).

This article argues for a new understanding of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Reitergeschichte from 1899 through integrating the story’s animals as the perceiving pre-consciousness into its narrative voice. Through Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s pre-reflective apparatus of perception that intimately links animals and humans through their shared «past that has never been present», this article offers a phenomenological reading of animality in the narrative. Within the context of Jacques Derrida’s The Animal That Therefore I Am, this article examines the attribution of logos beyond the traditional human-animal dichotomy.

The sixteenth-century migrations of Anabaptist communities within Europe, particularly Tyrol, becomes an important literary theme for the Austrian novelist Maria Veronika Rubatscher who draws parallels between the relocated fellowship and the German-speaking minority in Italy after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Discussing the portrait of Tyrolean Anabaptism in her novel Das Lutherische Joggele, this paper shows how the author utilizes the movement’s history as a means of expressing her nationalistic identity.

Marlen Haushofer’s last novel «Die Mansarde» shares important thematic similarities with her better-known novel «Die Wand», as it tells the story of a woman who loses her hearing and – while waiting for it to come back, far away from her family in a small village – starts considering and then actually living an independent life. In a step-by-step analysis, this essay reveals how the female protagonist is only to some extent saved when, as a result of a brutal and bloody event, her hearing comes back, since moving back into the city and regaining her role and place as a mother implies giving up the independent life she had started to establish.

Moving from the thesis that the question of happiness centers on ethics, this paper contributes to the clarification of the concept and then discusses happiness as it is represented in the works of Peter Handke. The peculiarity of these representations of happiness is that they thematize happiness anachronistically with regard to the relevant “Zeitgeist”. By tracing down the ways in which happiness is processed in Handke’s works and by comparing the social implications of these strategies, this paper satisfies the desideratum that arises from the fact that the ethics of happiness in the works of Peter Handke have hardly received any scholarly attention.

This paper tries to map out the political poetics of Peter Handke’s Die Lehre der Saint-Victoire (1980). Handke’s text is shown to emulate Cézanne’s painting technique of associating coloured patches with the harmonious whole of an image, a procedure that accords with Theodor Adorno’s aesthetics after Auschwitz. The stab this paper takes at fleshing out Handke’s political aesthetics leads to the critical question as to whether this is simply aestheticism revamped.

This article aims at providing an interpretation and analysis of German literary works, especially of Stefan Zweig’s short story Burning Secret (2011), read through the lenses of recent theories on the interconnectedness of living space, identity formation and emotions. The reading here suggested moves from the analogy between literary investigations and proper Freudian suggestions. Zweig’s optimism in coming to terms with – and working through – the inner struggle of the adolescent main protagonist is here assimilated to a kind of modern folktale and becomes the “untimely” humane message that echoes classical ideals of the Weimar culture.
