When the parody of Promessi Sposi (1930) was sent to press, Guido da Verona did not imagine he was committing the crime of lese-majesty with regard to the Manzonian totem, nor that it would be blacklisted by the Fascist regime. This paper shows that, based on the analysis of the manuscript, the author's intention was not satirical, but a playful parody. It is a comparative analysis between the da Verona version and the Manzonian hypertext, with particular attention placed on the origin of the comic. Besides highlighting the traits that characterize the text brimming with linguistic wit by da Verona, the paper describes the comedic strategies used by the author based on the characters and situations, as well as in the discourse itself. The analysis shows how the comic meaning and the breaking of logical and temporal links crack the orderly vision of the world and the language carefully chosen and utilized by Alessandro Manzoni.

Inoltre, l’analisi viene inquadrata nell’ambito delle risorse glottodidattiche coeve per l’insegnamento linguistico nelle scuole primarie e popolari, adottate e rielaborate per queste scuole.LEARNING TO READ AND WRITE IN REGIMENTAL SCHOOLS (1861-1915)Regimental public schools were places where illiterate Italian adults and non-native speakers were taught, spanning the time period between Italian unification to the 1970s. These schools aimed at minimal literacy, particularly in reading and writing, through the use of materials and textbooks designed for this particular audience. The article includes samples from textbooks published between 1861 and 1915, with regard to handwriting, spelling, punctuation and pronunciation, considered fundamental requirements for the more advanced activities carried out these schools. The analysis is placed in the framework of contemporary language teaching methods employed in primary and popular schools, which were adopted and revised for regimental teaching.

«PALPITANTE, RIDENTE, NOSTALGICA, APPASSIONATA»: LA LINGUA DEI DIARI DI ANTONIA POZZI
Sergio, Giuseppe; Università degli Studi di Milano

url:https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/promoitals/article/view/2815
it_IT
“Throbbing, laughing, nostalgic, passionate”language in the diaries of Antonia Pozzi The article studies the diaries of the poet and photographer Antonia Pozzi, born in 1912 and who committed suicide in 1938. They seem very heterogeneous due to their typical “cavity” form, but also because of their division into three separate sections: there are her notebooks from ’25 to ’27, travel notes from 1933, the intimate diary written between the '35 and the year of her death. The analysis focuses on the different language of the diaries and the functions that Antonia Pozzi gives them, functions that are both existential and poetic. In the intimate diary, in particular, the writing is on the one hand configured as a pharmacon, rising above contingencies to address philosophical and literary issues, but it is also a place to fix images, reflections and impressions in view of a future poetic revision, as shown by the precise correspondences present between them.

Backdating through travelsSeventeenth and eighteenth century travel literature features, among many points of interest, ideas for researching the history of the language, especially lexical aspects. The article does not intend to give a complete lexical description of the odeporic texts examined, but is limited to a substantial number of backdatings and datings of words collected in those texts, thusgoing beyond the limits of textual periegetic literature, through Google books. Despite this partial shift of attention, we continue to document the richness of odeporic vocabulary: scientifically, historically, through foreign terms and regionalisms, bearing witness to the varied curiosity of travelers.

Italian language in musical scores from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth centuries The article aims to present the essential features of consolidated Italian technical terminology in musical scores between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Musical lexis in Italian is classified on the basis of four fundamental categories, according to different functions and different meanings of the various terms: 1) genre (Sonata, Sinfonia, Quartetto, Fuga, etc.); 2) agogical aspects, ie.. relating to the definition of tempo (Andante, Allegro, Presto, but also rallentando, accelerando, etc.); 3) dynamics, related to different degrees of the intensity of the volume of the notes (the famous piano and forte, with their numerous gradations, but also crescendo, diminuendo, etc.); 4) other expressive characteristics, observable in the succession of musical staves (as dolce, scherzando, con fuoco, etc.). In the works of some German and French composers, we also observe the occurrence of technical terms in Italian in comparison to those used in their native languages.

From Ugo Foscolo ufficiale to il capitano Ugo Foscolo:literary and linguistic changes in a self-help diptych by Edmondo De AmicisAfter the second edition of Military life in Italy and at the end of his stay in Florence, Edmondo de Amicis published an opinion article, Ugo Foscolo Ufficiale, in Italia militare, the magazine where he began his literary career. It is an almost unknown first version of another article entitled Il Capitano Ugo Foscolo contained in Ricordi 1870-‘71. The title change was only a superficial sign of the revision regarding content and linguistic aspects, an inheritance of Emilia Peruzzi’s writing lessons. The study aims to contextualize these two different versions of De Amicis’ article within his literary and linguistic biography. It also analyzes the changes between the versions regarding their scopes, readers and types of editions.

Cherubini (1814) in the history of the first dialect lexicographyThe first edition of the Milanese-Italian Dictionary by Francesco Cherubini (1814) was inspired by the theories of Cesarotti, who considered dialects to be an important source for the enrichment of the national language. The essay compares the lexicographical criteria and guidelines of Cherubini’s Dictionary with Dialect Dictionaries from the eighteenth century from other dialect areas that he used, and identifies common and new elements.

But would Cherubini like the name Francesco? In the first part, this paper compares the proper names in Cherubini, in the Dictionary of the dialects of the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland and in the dialect of the Italian-speaking area Switzerland, and highlights the differences in registration criteria and types of treatment. The second part documents the presence of items from the vocabulary the Italian-speaking area Switzerland in the Milanese-Italian Dictionary and the growing interest shown by Cherubini for these dialects from the first to the second edition (1839), identifying the sources and the recording modes.

Aspects of Italian in Francesco Cherubini’s “Vocabolario milanese-italiano” (second edition)The paper illustrates the idea of Italian underlying Francesco Cherubini’s Milanese-Italian dictionary (second edition), his lexicographic procedure and his writing practice After briefly considering the Introduction and some relevant methodological instructions, we examine the dictionary and consider the breadth and quality of the linguistic scrutiny of Italian literature, the relationship with “Tuscan speech” and with common language of the many peoples of Italy” and the characteristics in the definitions for each entry. Subsequently the author’s style is discussed, taking examples from the Introduction and, in the dictionary, from discursive texts including definitions of entries. We point out the interplay between traditional education – including archaism at times – and new formations in the dictionary, with greater attention on technicality, the filtering of some unavoidable, deprecated Lombardisms. His was a bold undertaking- honest and difficult comparison with an Italian that was still partially non-existent, incomplete and inconsistent.

Cherubinian etymologiesThe etymologies of the two editions of the Milanese-Italian dictionary by Francesco Cherubini, drawn from sources ranging from Varon Milanes to Muratori, on the one hand show the typical weaknesses of the previous stage the discovery of the comparative method, especially when going back to Greek and Latin. On the other hand, these volumes are commendable for caution used in many cases and still seem useful when reassembling contemporary foreign languages or when the explanation of a word involves ethnography. The article ends with an explanation of the entry “mazzacronegh”.

The formation of ethnic words in Francesco Cherubini’s reflection on language The aim of this paper is to describe the structure and contents of Francesco Cherubini’s Vocabolario Patronimico, as well as the empirical sources consulted for its compilation. We will address two of the most common issues in the debate on the formation of ethnic nouns and adjectives in Italian, namely the existence of allomorphs and supplementary variants, and the morpho-pragmatic motivation displayed by some of the derivative suffixes occurring in ethnic nouns and adjectives derived from both personal and place names. We will offer a few observations on the place occupied by the above-mentioned issues in Cherubini’s thought and, by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the Vocabolario Patronimico, we will draw attention to a few topics which may be of some interest to contemporary scholars.

For employees in Milan and proper behavior of young men: Francesco Cherubini’s "Vocabolario mantovano-italiano"This minor work within Cherubini’s production, the Vocabolario mantovano-italiano, represents an intermediate stage in Cherubini’s work and his lexicographical reflections between the two editions of the Vocabolario milanese. Although his contemporaries did not fail to point out some limitations, the work is striking when considering who it was intended for: schools and public officials who, moving around the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom, were confronted with a dialect they did not understand.

Reflections of the (milanese) world of publishing in dialectAs well as being a lexicographer and dialectologist, Francesco Cherubini spent much of his professional life dealing with books: the vast world of publishing, printing and the paper industry was one of the most specialized sectors represented in the Vocabolario milanese-italiano, a work characterized by a particular focus on arts and crafts terminology. This paper provides an annotated summary and comments on such items, emphasizing the great responsibility of the compiler and the strong autobiographical component emerging from the “words of books”.

Practice and grammar: Cherubini as language teacher and author of textbooksThis paper considers Cherubini’s textbooks, written for primary schoolteachers in the Lombardo-Venetian region during the post-Napoleonic Era. After selecting the corpus, the analysis outlines the objectives and content of these textbooks as well as the language teaching method, which featured some avant-garde techniques like corrective feedback, aimed at augmenting the efficacy and success of teaching interaction. The application of these techniques to develop correct pronunciation and good spelling skills will be observed. These fields are significant because they are related to Cherubini’s lexicographical work, proof the attention placed on teaching a local spoken Italian before Unification.

What remains of Cherubini today? Two case studiesSince the beginning of the twenty-first century, the phenomenon of dialect resurgence has manifested in Italy through the emergence of dialects in Computer Mediated Communication, especially, on bottom-up created Web sites, like the free, multilingual, online encyclopedia Wikipedia. In this article, we will examine the legacy of Cherubini and his Milanese-Italian dictionary on the regional Lombard version of Wikipedia. We will review the articles both in terms of spelling, comparing the choices of Milanese lexicographer with those most utilized currently online, and from a morpho-syntactic point of view, discussing the presence and the productivity of some phrasal verbs.

Tourism, an important industry with a significant social and cultural dimensions, provides interesting stimuli for the study of communication, particularly in the search for adequate tools for persuading potential clients. Since the internet is an essential tool for self-promotion nowadays, specialists examine how tourist destinations are presented in different types of digital texts such as official tourism websites, which combine the informative function of guidebooks with the promotional function of brochures and leaflets. The purpose of this study is to analyse the rhetorical strategies used on the official homepages of nine Italian regions to catch the eye of potential clients and create an identity for a particular region as a tourist destination.

Notes on the thought and language of Federico BorromeoA leading figure in 17th century Milan, Cardinal Federico Borromeo remains tied to the character in Manzoni's masterpiece in the collective imagination, while fewer, more recent studies have directly analyzed his written production. Of special interest in this regard are his Sacred writings, the sermons given by the Archbishop which he himself collected in Italian. We propose a brief study of the Pentecostal sermons.

New diamesia: l’italiano dell’uso and new media (with a case study on the resurgence of clitics with bisognare)The article focuses on evolutionary trends in Italian in recent decades, particularly in relation to the possibilities offered and the needs brought about by new technologies. In particular, it analyzes the linguistic effects of the redefinition of the characteristics of written language. This has led, at least in some contexts, to a general simplification of written texts, producing a sort of italiano scritto medio the variety at the base of neo-medial texts. They appear to be characterized by considerable variability and mutability, partly depending on the user’s characteristics, and partly on his/her history, and partly on the communicative situation. After considering that the best socio-linguistic label among those currently available is “modo d’uso della lingua”, we underline the nature of the user community construct (a variety of Ausbau, within certain limits). This use of language also reflects marginal or avant-garde phenomena, like the clitic climbing with the verb bisognare, whose spread is studied both in neo-medial and traditional texts. In the former it is more frequent, and this may authorize marginal phenomena due to the exposure guaranteed by the frequency with which they occur.

“On writing and speaking”. Old and new diamesiasThis volume collects the acts of the conference “Di scritto e di parlato”. Antiche e nuove diamesie organized by the Department of Philological and Linguistic Literary Studies, the Doctorate in Literary, Artistic and Environmental Sciences, and Calcif, at the Università degli Studi di Milano which took place in Milan on 6 November 2015. The volume is divided into 2 parts, each of which addresses a section of the conference: the first part collects the papers on history and linguistics, while in the second features the theoretical and language teaching contributions and the relationship between synchronic written and spoken language. The papers trace the historical perspective of the manifestations of the voice from the origins up to the 1800’s (from the cantari of the 1300's by Beatrice Barbiellini Amidei, to the Giuliani by Valentina Petrini, in De Amicis and other writers, linguists and lexicographers from the late nineteenth century by Matteo Grassano, in the manuals for regimental schools by Michela Dota), together with other papers on different synchronous, theoretical and language teaching issues (on the theme of the simulation of speech and enunciation by Enrico Testa; the linguistic analysis of the corpora of learners of Italian by Elisa Corino and Carla Marello and Franca Bosc; research on the writings of the half-literate from the mid-twentieth century by Elisabetta Banfi; the reconstruction of Spitzer's thought by Diego Stefanelli; a survey of new and traditional media by Ilaria Bonomi and Elisabetta Mauroni and Massimo Prada).

A check of Google Books’sources used by lexicographersThe purpose of this article is to verify how the Google Books corpus can change, commonly used as a source for lexical antedating. In a sample of 1000 antedatings collected from Google in 2011, most of the references that were still available in 2015 are no longer present in 2017. However, new texts have been added, which sometimes refine the results. In 2015, about 40% of the reference sample was upgraded, but only 10% were major upgrades, which changed the century of first citation. After a year, the updates were minimal and showed the criticality of the disappearance of sources.

Revising translated texts: the italian point of viewFor some time, attention has been paid to the revision process in Italy, particularly texts translated from other languages. The article examines why it is necessary to review a translated text after some time has passed, especially in light of the changes that have affected recent Italian. Based on studies emphasizing a certain linguistic conservatism in literary and non-literary translations, there is a need for translators to gain great awareness of current standard Italian and accept the different varieties of language. The translator, responsible for the final quality of the text, can use the reflections presented in the current debate on the notion of error in the context of learning and the complex set-up for the description of contemporary Italian and its varieties.

From Crème caramel to Cupcake: the invasion of anglicisms in the kichen, restaurants and barsA review of the relevant literature on culinary language shows that this variety of Italian has always been characterized by a strong presence of foreign words. Today, English seems to have replaced French as the source language of the majority of loan words found in recipes, restaurant reviews and other texts dealing with food and drink. The automatic analysis of a corpus comprising different types of articles published online confirms the presence of a large number of loan words – also from Spanish and Japanese – as well as the dominant role of English words in Italian culinary language. However, a qualitative analysis shows that, with the notable exception of alcoholic drinks, cakes and desserts, French words are still commonly used to refer to ingredients and cooking techniques, whereas English words are mainly used to give a touch of modernity and globalization to all social activities connected to the production, distribution and consumption of food and drink.

Between Gigli and Mastrofini: the “Prospetto di verbi toscani tanto regolari che irregolari” (1761) by Giovanni Battista Pistolesi This study highlights a few aspects of the little-known Prospetto di verbi toscani tanto regolari che irregolari(1761) by Giovanni Battista Pistolesi from Florence. The Prospetto is among grammatical treatises devoted specifically to Italian verbs (especially with regard to the works of Girolamo Gigli and Marco Mastrofini). Secondly, the author’s linguistic ideas (in particular the concept of idiotismo and the considerable attention paid to the use of spoken language) will be discussed by analyzing some verbal forms focused on in the notes. Finally, based on the comedies of Giovanni Battista Fagiuoli, the author assesses the degree of reliability ineighteenth century Florentine language.

The history of the “metodo rafforzista” for teaching Italian (1814-1914)This article retraces the history and peculiarities of the “metodo rafforzista”, a language teaching method developed in Italy during the first part of 1800s. In the post-Unitarian period, it was used in elementary schools, especially in Southern Italy, and also in military schools and in some institutes for the Deaf and Dumb. Orthographic and orthoepic models proposed by the “metodo rafforzista” diverged from rules of traditional Italian grammar. The method, supported by Graziadio Isaia Ascoli and Francesco Lorenzo Pullè, two of the most distinguished Italian linguists at that time, was subsequently rejected by the Ministry of Public Education, and it vanished during the second half of 1900s.

«UN DIALOGO STUPENDO DAVVERO». VERGA ALLA RICERCA DEL PARLATO BORGHESE, DA "UNA PECCATRICE" A "ROSE CADUCHE"
Motta, Daria

Verga’s search for bourgeois speech, from “Una peccatrice” to “Rose caduche”The novel Una peccatrice (1866) and the comedy Rose caduche (1869) are two of Verga’s juvenile texts linked by many thematic and structural elements which critics have already observed. Both maintain linguistic and stylistic features typical of Verga’s early production, but reveal traces of future innovations. In them, for the first time, Verga artistically explores the spoken language of the bourgeoisie, based on his own direct experience at cultural and social gatherings in Florence. This essay identifies the most important morphological and syntactical elements of spoken language in the comedy, evaluating whether they are present in the novel as well and their different function in the text in order to evaluate Verga’s linguistic awareness and his competence in relating language and style to text genre on the diamesic level.

Small garibaldian glossaryThis paper presents the partial results of the lexical investigation of Memorie by Giuseppe Garibaldi. This little-known text, on the margins of official literature, is of considerable interest due to its particular language. The material collected is the ideal continuation of Garibaldi (2015), an edition of the work with a linguistic comment. The article presents what was not included in this volume. The approximately three hundred lexical forms are presented as a glossary, preceded by thematic lists and followed by an appendix for consulting the material commented on elsewhere (with indications in order to consult the forms analyzed in the previous publication).

TecmirioStarting from two of Carducci’s letters regarding the transfer of the capital of the Kingdom of Italy to Florence, the article retraces the history and outline the luck of the Greek tecmirio ‘sure sign’. Sixteenth Century examples by Bernardo Segni, Annibal Caro and Tasso are illustrated and cited, linked to the earliest translations of Aristotle’s Rhetoric, as well as rarer Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century poetic and technical-scientific occurrences, which illustrate the destiny of this word, now disappeared, which seems to have been emancipated from its status of philosophical technicality.

“I misteri di Napoli” from rhetoric to expressiveness In social and literary landscape of late XIX century, Francesco Mastriani’s serial novel I Misteri di Napoli (1869-1870) was is a good example of how the Italian language was spread during a century that was crucial for linguistic unification in Italy. Aiming at creating direct contact with the audience, the author’s discursive strategies can be likened to those of the writers from the late XIX century. The strong will to document reality influenced Mastriani’s expressive choices in this novel. We evaluate and characterize the multi-faceted stylistic code that fluctuated between rhetoric and local color. This mixture can be partially explained by the well-known linguistic and literary fluidity of XIX century, as well as the choice to take advantage of the linguistic possibilities of dialect, which show how the author characterized the language in the various settings.

The word for everyone. The language of biblical translations in italian language in the 16th and early 17th centuries As is well known, the Protestant Reformation led to many Bible translations. In Italy, after the editions by the Humanist Antonio Brucioli, the main and virtually exclusive center for Bibles in the vernacular was Geneva, a Calvinist stronghold with a prosperous typographical market. In this article we review the most peculiar linguistic aspects of the translations of the Holy Scriptures into Italian published during the Sixteenth and the beginning of the Seventeenth Centuries.

“GIANNETTINO” TRA SILLABARIO E GRAMMATICA: UN’ANALISI LINGUISTICA DELLA TRADIZIONE DEI MANUALI COLLODIANI
Prada, Massimo

“Giannettino” from primers to grammar books: a linguistic analysis of the tradition of collodian textbooks The contribution studies “Giannettino” by Collodi from the linguistic and the historical perspective of his tradition, comparing it with two texts that are close in terms of chronology, editorial structure and process: the Grammatica di Giannettino and the Adventures of Pinocchio. In particular, regarding Giannettino, the language is generally studied, above all the linguistic evolution from the first edition in 1877 to the last edition published during the author’s lifetime in 1889. The result of the survey shows how the Collodi moved towards traditionalism, also based on the Rigutini’s teaching which Collodi had long interacted with. This volume almost always favors the most common forms of written use and moves away from more puristic usage, approximating the most connoted varieties of diaphasia, diastratia and diatopia.

Light and shadow in “Notturno” This study aims to verify, through a quantitative analysis, the place the Notturno occupies within D’Annunzio’s work, that is, if the «commentario delle tenebre» belongs to the “nocturnal” phase of the Pescarese, far distant and characterized – as some critics say – with respect to the previous aestheticizing, self-centered, solar phase. We will analyze some thematic and figurative isotopies, which belong to the semantic fields of visions and sensations, and their importance and characterization will be calculated using statistical tests in order to ascertain their specificity in the Notturno in comparison to the “solar” production of D’Annunzio and in particular to Il Fuoco, as the maximum expression of the Poet’s “diurnal” works.

Music of the body: on the denomination of body noises in contemporary italian medicineThe essay aims to illustrate the creative capacity of Italian medical language through the analysis of the Lessico Medico Italiano, a dictionary of medical terms written by Pietro Benigno and Pietro Li Voti and published by Edizioni Medico-Scientifiche in 1992 and 2012. After a brief introduction on loans from other languages, we illustrate the formation of higher lexical units, including eponyms and polyromatics, used to define diseases. Consideration will be given to some procedures of lexical formation that have not yet been explored in the study of the language of contemporary medicine, including metaphors and onomatopoeia.

Punctuation in the writing of semi-literate italians: the “letters” of Leo SpitzerThis paper explores a field of research which has been given only marginal attention: punctuation in the writing of the “semi-literate”. The investigation was conducted based on a corpus consisting of letters from Italian prisoners of war collected by the Romance language philologist Leo Spitzer during the First World War. After having illustrated the linguistic peculiarities of the missives, attention is focused on the use of inter-punctuation. The analysis reveals the emergence of a "textual conscience" in the semi-literate writers, who recognize the central role of punctuation in the structuring of the text and therefore make use of it even with outcomes that sometimes deviate from the norm.

DA “I CLASSICI IN DIALETTO” AI “CLASSICI DEL DIALETTO” NELLA MANUALISTICA SCOLASTICA E POPOLARE TRA IL 1861 E IL 1930
Dota, Michela
2019-02-26
url:https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/promoitals/article/view/11295

From “classics in dialect” to “classics of dialect” in school and popular manuals between 1861 and 1930This paper highlight the relationship between the classics and dialect in school and popular manuals between 1861 and 1930. In particular, from the examination of the corpus of texts collected, compared with the existing studies on the topic, we intend to show the evolution of the classical-dialect binomial in the aforementioned time period. In the second half of the nineteenth century, versions of Dante’s Commedia in dialect and some passages of Greek and Latin classics shared a generic pedagogical and instructive purpose; moreover, they constituted the first step in the refinement of the vernacular (in particular for those that did not have a solid literary tradition) through comparison with classics par excellence. This phase was propaedeutic to the reversal of perspective, in the Italian-Dialect relationship, which took place in the 1920s, when the establishment of a canon of popular and dialectal oral literature was encouraged. In a comparative light, Italian had to measure itself with the expressive potential of the vernacular, also for the future Italian Tales, which were already consecrated dialectal classics.

On classics in dialect: routine or new practice? Comment on “Comme s’arricettaie zizío” (Carlo Avvisati, Arte’m, 2018)This contribution questions a recently published editorial product which proposes two letters addressed to Tacitus by Pliny the Younger (VI, 16 and VI, 20) in Neapolitan dialect. The initial reading of the text raised natural curiosity as well as a wide range of questions that we will try to answer here. Starting from a historical overview of the text and the narrative legacy with which the twentieth century has accepted the memory of Pliny the Elder handed down by his nephew, the discussion will also investigate the inherent sense in the use of that dialect and how a “working” translation from the Latin facilitates a better comparison with the rendition in Neapolitan. We will also establish if and how much the latter has degrees of kinship with the interpretation provided in the Italian printed by the publisher. The analysis has as its object the first of the two letters mentioned above, as they are programmatic and introductory to the author’s encomiastic intentions. The text carefully raises all these problems: far from being a prose epistle tout-court, the letter appears in fact to move along the exitus viri illustris axis and regards practical writing that claims to direct the narration of a historical event. Almost trapped in Pliny’s web, the Neapolitan reconsiders those same styles, duplicates their narrative strategies and amplifies the degree of discursiveness and conversationality of Latin writing, by simplifying the constructs often colored by a Tacitian inconcinnitas. This analysis also surveys if and how much Avvisati’s Neapolitan respects the literary ancestry recalled in the Preface to the volume and which it moves away from, to what extent the process of Italianization has impacted and if this is to be attributed to the underlying Italian translation. The complex historical reality and diversification that have characterized language in relation to vulgarization, translation and interpretation also raise questions about the cultural, didactic and civil value of this undertaking, responding to the simple yet opaque query: what does it mean to translate into dialect nowadays?

The ‘Battle of mice and frogs’ by Alessandro Garioni between greek, italian and milaneseIn 1793 the Dominican monk Alessandro Garioni published an edition of the Battle of mice and frogs with a literal Italian translation and poetic “paraphrasing” in Milanese. In the introduction, Garioni ascribes the poem to Homer. In his view, this was the first attempt to translate Homer into Milanese. The analysis of the work and its relationship to earlier literature, both scholarly and not, aims to place it within the tradition of Classical and Milanese literature. In particular, it is noted that the paraphrasing in Milanese is not a parody of the Greek poem.

I "RICORDI DI LONDRA" DI EDMONDO DE AMICIS: UN’ANALISI LINGUISTICA
Canazza, Alessandro

I Ricordi di Londra by Edmondo De Amicis: a linguistic analysis The article proposes the linguistic analysis of Ricordi di Londra, a travel report written by Edmondo De Amicis in the 1870s. In particular, the first edition from 1874 is compared – from a phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical point of view – with the latest one from 1901, evaluating the changes that occurred between the two editions and framing them within the theory and practice of Deamicisian linguistics, as well as the linguistic panorama and the grammatical and lexicographic reflections from the same period. A comparison is made with the text in the appendix to the volume, Una visita ai quartieri poveri di Londra by L. L. Simonin, translated into Italian anonymously, whose linguistic form - certainly not attributable to De Amicis - appears in several places oriented towards an archaizing and conservative direction. The language in the pages of the Ricordi suggests a moderate Manzonism, far from Trecentist purism as much as from the Tuscanist drifts of the most intransigent followers of Manzoni: the Florentine of the cultured use of life is sanctioned, without disdaining allotropy or indulging in forms that distort the customs of Italian literary prose now established, as the essential fulcrum of a common national language.

Punctuation in interlingual subtitles of Anglo-Saxon television series This paper deals with Italian punctuation marks in TV show subtitles. What makes this type of text interesting, apart from some very specific features (coexistence of different communication codes, connection between punctuation marks and spoken language etc.), is the widespread use of audiovisual products, especially among young audiences, hence the possible influence on new forms of writing. We first describe the main features of subtitling; then we analyze three punctuation marks (comma, colon, ellipsis) in a corpus of 12 episodes taken from 10 TV shows in English.

Autobiographies of emigrants from San Marco in Lamis: linguistic and textual characteristics The essay examines four autobiographies written by emigrants in Australia originally from San Marco in Lamis (FG), a town in Puglia. Three features of these texts are taken under consideration: the relevance of the linguistic-cultural competence; the phono-morphological aspect of the documents, where the dialectal substrate with efforts towards standardization can be found; the textual aspect of the texts written to be understood by an unknown audience. The main focus is on the latter aspect, in an attempt to understand how the implicit contents and the content articulations of the texts are treated (in a linguistically rudimentary but communicatively effective way). In general, the linguistic features of these texts are also found in epistolary communication within the context of emigration; however, there are some specific features which arise from the particular textual nature of broad narrative scripts, in which the usual conventions of letter-writing are not present.

Speaking of Don Giulio Tarra once again
The article is an introduction for the proceedings of the study conferences in 2016 and 2017 dedicated to Giulio Tarra, the Milanese priest who for many years headed what is now the Pio Istituto dei sordi. It presents a picture of the main methodological, didactic and linguistic themes connected with the activity of the educator and offers a linguistic overview of one of his most successful didactic works: the Letture graduate, studied in their diachronic evolution, which reveals how the Tarra progressively approached a Tuscanism of living use that could be said to have a Manzonian approach, starting from the 1870s.

«Why should we speak Tuscan Language?». Linguistic notes on Giulio Tarra’s letture graduate
The article makes some comments on Giulio Tarra’s Letture graduate (published in 1862 and reissued in several editions in the following decades) and demonstrates his contributions in the field of spoken Italian didactics. Firstly, analyzing the teaching methodology of the author underlines the idea of a simple writing style, modeled on the «good language spoken in Tuscany». The study then focuses on the third volume of the textbook: the comparison between two different editions (1868 and 1886) allows the frequency of spoken expressions in the section Conversazioni e corrispondenze famigliari to be highlighted. Finally, the relationship between tradition and innovation in the other sections is also viewed from the same linguistic perspective. The article ends with an appendix dedicated to the probable influence of Tarra’s writings on Edmondo De Amicis’s Cuore.

The “most arduous, and therefore most deserving, education”. Brusuglio, 8 october 1972, Alessandro Manzoni and Giulio Tarra: the “foundation” of a linguistic position
The article aims to evaluate some aspects of the relationship between Giulio Tarra's linguistic pedagogy and the theoretical structure of the idea of linguistic training underlying Manzoni's linguistic thought. Starting from an analysis of the report of the meeting between Manzoni and a group of young students from the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Milan, directed by Tarra, the essay aims to bring to light the common adherence to an ideal word understood as an instrument for integration and social participation.

The linguistic pedagogy of Giulio Tarra
The contribution considers language education processes underlying the pure oral method advocated by Tarra. These processes are analyzed in relation to the most significant issues for current school language education. In particular, the contribution focuses on proposals to encourage the use of the Italian language among deaf-mute students, on the role of dialects and, more generally, on the characteristics of Tarra’s language teaching methodology.

Giulio Tarra translator from French
With the volume entitled Il Libro pel bambino, Don Giulio Tarra won two literary competitions held in 1861 by the Congresso Pedagogico Italiano: the first was dedicated to books for deaf-mute chidren, the second to books for rural schools. Among Tarra’s works published by Paolo Carrara we find “Lezioni in famiglia, versione da M. Carraud”. This article provides some information about Zulma Carraud, the author of the collection of novels entitled: Historiettes véritables pour les enfants de quatre à huit ans published by Hachette in 1864 and translated into Italian by Don Giulio. Previously the same publisher had collected Zulma’s first works in a series to be used in primary schools. Carraud, during the Second Empire period in France, and Tarra, in post-Unity Italy, both contributed to the development of the publishing industry for schools and children with their educational and entertaining books.

The Congress of Milan between sound and sign
The following article presents the contrast between the oralist method and the sign method in the education of the deaf in Europe and Italy from the 18th century onwards. Particular attention is paid to the causes of the oralist outcome of the 1880 Milan Congress and the consequent underestimation of sign language. The return of signs is also recalled, thanks to the fundamental linguistic discovery of cheremes (equivalent to phonemes in sign language) by the American linguist William Stokoe and the consequent new awareness of their linguistic complexity. Finally, attention is paid to very recent poetic production in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and the current situation in Italy regarding the recognition of LIS.

Pasquale Fornari (1837-1923), a polygraph at the service of living language
The article aims to retrace the intellectual biography of Pasquale Fornari, teacher, later the head of the Regio istituto per i sordomuti [Royal institute for the deaf and dumb] in Milan and a prolific writer. Firstly, the affirmation in Italy of the so-called oral method is reconstructed, highlighting the role played by Fornari; secondly, the reasons for the success of this method will be investigated, taking the socio-cultural context into account. Finally, Fornari’s educational publications will be described, showing how they were closely connected to his profession: in most cases, his books and journals were didactic tools that were likely to be successfully used by deaf pupils as well.

Signs on stage or the posterity of Charles-Michel de l’Épée in nineteenth century Italian theatre
This paper examines the nineteenth-century Italian reception of L’Abbé de l’Épée (1799), a historical comedy by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly about Charles-Michel de l’Épée, the first well-known educator of deaf people. Presenting the principle Italian translations and the published and unpublished sequels of the play, this study takes into account its almost uninterrupted presence on stage and in the editorial context of the period. By analyzing the paratexts, the essay discusses the modalities and functions of Bouilly’s choice of adopting a sort of proto-sign language as a distinctive codex in the representation of deafness.

MODELLI SINTATTICI E STRUMENTI VISIVI: LA GRAMMATICA PER STUDENTI CON BES
Notarbartolo, Daniela

url:https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/promoitals/article/view/12823

Syntactic models and visual tools: the grammar for students with special educational needs
As taught traditionally, grammar cannot be inclusive. In fact, it provides abstract knowledge, requiring students with special educational needs to exert cognitive effort to understand definitions that are often ambiguous and not empirically verifiable. In addition, it does not promote methods for fruitful abstractions necessary to appreciate the formal system of a language. This paper offers solutions to these limitations by based on the author’s practical experience. To facilitate the understanding of the functioning of a language, models for syntactical analysis, that is, valency syntax and syntagmatic structures of noun groups, are proposed. Visual tools and sentence transformations are suggested, in order to help identify the position and syntactic functioning of verbs and nouns.

An exceptional young collaborator: Carlo Tagliavini and the Encyclopedia Italiana (1929-1937)
This article reconstructs Carlo Tagliavini’s collaboration with the Linguistics section of the first edition of the Enciclopedia Italiana (1929-1937) through correspondence and documentary materials from various archives. After the death of his mentor Alfredo Trombetti, Tagliavini, despite his very young age, became in a few years one of the most prolific contributors to the encyclopedic section and one of the heads of the entries concerning the linguistic families. He also wrote some of the most significant articles of the section, such as Lingue and Linguistica. The last part the paper proposes a new and updated bibliography of all the articles written by the young linguist for the Enciclopedia. Finally, an Appendix transcribes the manuscripts of the so-called “suppressed entries” kept in the Historical Archive of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia: those entries were edited by Tagliavini, but then never published.

“Today we’re learning z for writing: «it’s been two months of sanctions, but we’re strong and victory will be ours»”: the teaching of Italian in teacher’s registers (1924-1950)
The study examines a corpus of “Giornali di classe” (1924-1950) collected in school archives of different municipalities (Lombardy, Umbria, Lazio, Basilicata, Calabria, Puglia); these documents constitute a privileged source for the reconstruction of language skills, the (self) representation of the educational attitude, the role and life of teachers in the first half of the twentieth century. The Registers also offer direct or reflected testimony of the teaching practices of elementary school teachers, representing the linguistic policy (and propaganda) of the fascist period and the evolution of ministerial programs. After a survey of the historical, social and educational contents, some topics are investigated, in particular: reading and writing, dialectophony and activities related to overcoming the obstacle of dialect, teaching in rural schools. The sources examined confirm the importance of drawing on documents of various origins, representative of different geographical, social and linguistic realities, to recompose the national framework of literacy and Italophony processes in its complex heterogeneity.

Language of use and popular language in Tommaseo’s dictionaries
The article investigates popular terms and meanings in Tommaseo’s dictionaries. Starting rom a digital survey of the various editions of the Dictionary of Synonyms and the Dictionary of the Language, the ‘popular’ entries were selected and divided by type in two Appendices: Tommaseo’s dictionary was the first to systematically record them. Their origins were studied, among first-hand entries offered by his collaborators and precise quotations taken from popular songs, in particular from Tuscany, by Giuseppe Tigri (missing in the “Table of abbreviations”). It was also possible to discover which, among the many contributors to the Dictionary, was the one intended for the selection of the volumes of songs, Savino Savini. A significant selection of unpublished correspondence kept at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence was cited.

Reading «Canti popolari greci» translated by Tommaseo. Notes to a new edition
The new edition of Canti popolari greci (Parma, Guanda, 2017), first published in Venice in 1842, presents the brilliant translation by Niccolò Tommaseo, enriched by a comprehensive introduction and updated notes. The book played a key role throughout the Romantic Age, both in Italy and Europe. This collection of poems holds great importance in the multilingual context of our time as well. The comparison with Claude Fauriel’s translation into French (which Tommaseo always considered his “guiding star”) emphasizes the originality of the linguistic style achieved.

Sociophonetic variability of <ò> in the Varzese dialect
This paper presents a study of a vocalic variable in the Gallo-Italic dialect spoken in the town of Varzi (Pavia), represented graphically as <ò>. This grapheme represents sounds with three different Romance developments, and there seems to be a free alternation with the grapheme <ò> in the reflexes of stressed Romance /a/ in open syllables. The survey was carried out by means of field recordings of a word list and semi-informal single interviews. The acoustic analysis of the wordlist shows that all three Romance reflexes subsumed under <ò> have distinct phonetic realizations but does not support the <ò>/<ò> alternation as a diatopic marker, which nonetheless remain in the opinions of the speakers, possibily as a stereotype. However, women in the sample show a preference for the <ò> realization which, in our opinion, is due to an effort of preservation of a typical dialectal trait.

The other truth of Alda Merini: an ante litteram narrative - based medicine diary
In this study, the variations of “that cross without justice that was the madhouse” are outlined through the stylistic choices adopted by Alda Merini in L’altra verità. Diario di una diversa. The Diario, precisely because it is posthumous proof of a condition that denies, when not violent, human dignity, can be considered an example of ante litteram narrative medicine and is a precious instrument for reflection not only for the patient, but also for doctors and family members. In this essay, we investigate the frequency and co-occurrences of verbs and nouns, as well as the powerful choice of meditated derivational morphology – which Alda Merini used to express the different variations of discomfort and hope – using a quali-quantitative approach.

Neo-standard Italian today: state of the art
This paper discusses the notion of neo-standard Italian in today’s sociolinguistic scenario, paying attention to both theoretical and empirical aspects. After tracing the emergence of this new variety, the process that has led to the emergence of neo-standard Italian and its relationship with the old standard and regional standards is presented. The co-existence of new and old standards is discussed, taking into account the different roles played by social forces that determine what is “standard”, as well as recent empirical studies that show the existence of these two varieties from subjective and objective perspectives. Finally, some linguistic features that characterize this variety, also highlighting the trajectory in relation with the Labovian distinction of changes from above and from below, is discussed.

Obsolete Italian usage, not only contemporary legal language: the prepositional syntagma with egli
In contemporary Italian the pronoun egli preceded by a preposition (ad egli, da egli, con egli etc.) may sometimes occur in some varieties of language (such as burocratic or legal ones, but in substandard italian as well). This paper surveys the presence of this pattern through history of italian language, whose spread in ancient and modern high-level prose (treatises, chronicles, memorial documentations), predicting the current trend, is observed and analised.

NELLA BABELE DEL LAGER: LINGUE, PAROLE E COMUNICAZIONE NEI CAMPI NAZISTI
Zanchi, Leonardo

In the Babel of the lager: languages, words and communication in nazi camps
«The confusion of languages is a fundamental component of living here; one is surrounded by a perpetual Babel, in which everyone shouts orders and threats in languages never heard before, and woe betide whoever fails to grasp the meaning» These words were written in Se questo è un uomo, a book by Primo Levi, and they are an attempt to describe a consistent feeling of prisoners in the Nazi lager of Auschwitz. Italian survivors had to struggle to orient themselves in the multilingualism of the Nazi lager system and we find traces of this in their testimonies, both written and oral. They speak about themes such as the impossibility to express themselves inside the lager, the lack of opportunities to be understood and to comprehend others. Studying the language of lager means to go through the words of hatred, humiliation and Nazi violence, but also to analyze the human value of communication between the deportees, through a language created on solidarity, hope and resistance. By investigating the language in the Nazi lager, we can grasp the vision of survivors who passed through all this.

“I hate this, i want bones”: an initial survey of the linguistic characteristics of Italian-language pro-ana social pages
This paper presents the first linguistic profile of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) for the Italian language starting from the analysis of pro-ana web pages (i.e., accounts promoting potentially life-threatening eating behaviors as life-choices such as starvation, self-induced vomiting and laxative abuse). The analysis focuses on the lexical features of usernames and bios, the usage of concretized metaphors and the selection of both personal deictics and tense morphemes in the texts. The proposed findings aim to shed light on the feasibility of turning linguistic insights into a large-scale computational screening tool.

The landscapes and language project: criteria, application and challenges in the study of linguistic landscapes
Paesaggi e Lingue is a database on the Linguistic Landscape (PL) composed of a series of photographic images taken in some areas of the city of Milan with a high density of shops run by foreigners. Each photograph is accompanied by a data sheet that classifies the various aspects (linguistic, spatial, functional, product-related, etc.), making it possible for scholars from different disciplines to provide a quantitative framework and select significant cases. Referring to the abundant literature on PL, the article proposes the theoretical-methodological reflection that accompanied the realization of the database. The main issues addressed concern the hierarchical organization of the PL elements (units, subunits, signs), which allows us to analyze not only the single sign but also the field of relationships in which it is inscribed as well as the composite character of general categorizations (e.g., institutional, commercial, informal PL), in which certain actors are associated with certain spaces and functions. The result of this reflection has been a simplification and multiplication of the variables that allows the data collected to be cross-referenced according to multiple research and disciplinary perspectives.

SALIENZA E CONTATTO IN CONTESTO ITALOROMANZO: PROSPETTIVE TEORICHE E FENOMENI LINGUISTICI

Salience and contact in an Italo-Roman context: theoretical perspectives and linguistic phenomena
This work deals with the relationship between salience and Italian-dialect contact trying to comprehend the correspondence in the Italo-Romance context of the main theories diffused in literature and to propose a new analytical approach and specific categories which better fit this specific case of language contact. After discussing the main linguistic and extralinguistic aspects of the well-known theories concerning salience, the study focusses on a case study about the contact between Italian and Sicilian deriving from the lexical data of the Atlante Linguistico della Sicilia. In particular, as suggested by the same speakers during the interviews, the analysis makes clear the salience of the phonetic and morphological features of the local variety, also demonstrating the lack of correspondence of the salience theories and models taken into account. This leads to a more specific and, at the same time, broader definition of salience as well as to new categories by which classify those linguistic elements of the local variety characterized by a high level of awareness by the speakers.

Italian words in French-speaking areas: new lexicographical resources
Research on the Italianisms in French can be explored today through a new lexicographical corpus consisting of the glossaries describing the varieties of French spoken outside France, produced since the last quarter of the 20th century in order to collect the lexical peculiarities in use in French-speaking areas. This paper aims to enrich the database of the Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo (Accademia della Crusca), in order to verify the usefulness of these lexicographic sources in the study of loanwords from Italian. It provides examples of different types of Italianisms in the French spoken in Switzerland, Belgium, Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada. The loans here examined mostly confirm the thematic orientations and linguistic behavior of Italianisms already observed in contemporary standard French, but on the other hand, they reveal some linguistic and cultural curiosities due to their evolution in a spontaneous family context or their contact with other languages.

For a repertory of translations into Italian in Istria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the second half of the nineteenth century
The growing attention to the theory and history of translation in Italy has not been followed by the compilation of bibliographical repertories of translations published in volume form before the twentieth century. Despite the undeniable gaps, the Catalogue of Nineteenth-Century Italian Books has made it possible to compile a first list of translations published in the period 1850-1899. This article illustrates the modalities, problems and prospects of the research and reports the results relative to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. A further search on the OPAC of the National Library Service has made it possible to identify some translations published in today's Slovenian and Croatian Istria. This research is not exhaustive, but it allows us to arrive at a first evaluation of the phenomenon of translation in the geographical area and in the period considered.

Children of a Lesser Italian. The Didactics of Italian L1 in Rural Elementary Schools
The “anti-contamination prejudice” that characterized the imagination and mentality of the elites at the top of Italian society, from unification until the Second World War, was codified in the post-unification legislative provisions regarding the teaching programs for elementary school. They provided for a significant differentiation in teaching between urban schools and rural schools. The objectives and competences expected for Italian at the end of the cycle of elementary education were not uniform throughout the country; the impaired Italian of the rural schools - further mortified when these were, at the same time, girls’ schools - was, moreover, fatigued by the greater freedom granted to teachers in the use of dialect compared to urban schools, which were preferred destinations because they guaranteed a better salary. This paper to analyzes the Italian language programs of rural schools in relation to other elementary schools, with the objective of profiling "rural Italian" and the linguistic skills expected, from unification to the fall of Fascism. Through some examples, we will observe how the ministerial provisions were reflected in professional manuals and in some periodicals for teachers, as well as in school publications. In particular, we will focus on the teaching of writing and grammar.

The contribution of the “carte collodiane” to the study of Viaggio per l’Italia di Giannettino by Collodi
The third book of the popular Giannettino series, Il Viaggio per l’Italia di Giannettino by Collodi was published in three volumes during the 1880s and then continuously reprinted and modified, long after the author’s death. It describes Giannettino’s journey across the recently unified Italian peninsula, which is sketched by Collodi in a charming and vivid way. Due to the vastness of the subject matter and the amount of information provided, already after the first printed edition of the first volume (1880), the text was subjected to a vast and rigorous corrective work aimed at proposing emendations, clarifications and integrations and at correcting some errors that, at least in part, derived from the excessive trust that the author had placed in his privileged sources, the Baedeker guides dedicated to Italy. In view of the second edition of the first volume (1882), Collodi availed himself of the precious collaboration of friends and correspondents, many of whom in some way connected to the journal Fanfulla (Carrara, Avanzini, Cesana). Their advice was essential for the emendation of the dialectal sketches featured in the book’s most vivid pages. Collodi’s publisher, Felice Paggi, was very helpful as well, contacting his colleagues in other Italian cities, asking them to provide Collodi with information and advice from local experts and scholars, thus starting a trend which proved to be very successful in the drafting of the following volumes. The Collodi Archive of the National Central Library of Florence preserves this collection of preparatory materials, drafts and handwritten notes. This study outlines the trends and results of the corrections that affected Il Viaggio per l’Italia di Giannettino.

Giacomo Devoto linguist and grammarian of the Enciclopedia Italiana (1929-1937)
This paper studies Giacomo Devoto’s contribution to the first edition of the Enciclopedia Italiana (1927-1939), represented by more than 120 entries. The analysis dwells first on the entries referring to Pre-Indo-European and Indo-European languages; then on the biographical entries; and finally on those relating to grammatical and linguistic terminology. The essay demonstrates the importance of Devoto’s contributions and shows that the work for the Enciclopedia Italiana is a link between the author’s early research in comparative and Indo-European studies and the new interests in Italian grammar and stylistics developed by Devoto in the second half of the 1930s.

“Did i feel more Italian or English?”. Italian inserts in Iris Origo’s war diaries (1939-1944)
Anglo-American by birth and Italian by choice, Iris Cutting, who became Origo after her marriage, is an example of a cosmopolitan intellectual from the second half of the twentieth century. Her literary production often includes themes and subjects about her adoptive country and in these cases Origo's writing, without abandoning English, dips into Italian to support the diegesis with additions in the L2. This essay explores the presence of the Italian element in the author's war diaries, where the outbreak of World War II and its development in Italy are investigated with the lucid eye of a foreigner and the empathy of one who knew and deeply loved Italy and its people.

IL CONCETTO DI VALENZA IN ITALIA: VAILATI PRECURSORE DI TESNIÈRE
Branciforti, Giuseppe

The concept of valence in Italy: Vailati precursor of Tesnière
Vailati was one of the most eminent scholars of the early twentieth century. An eclectic figure, he spanned different fields of knowledge, from mathematics to philosophy and linguistics. In one of his last articles, he analyzed language in general and algebraic language in particular, which he considered as having a lexicon and syntax comparable to the lexicon and syntax of verbal language. In this paper he deepened the concepts of transitivity and relationship in an original way and sketched a model for verbal language that would later have great success and become known, after the publication of the work of the French linguist Lucien Tesnière, as the “Valential model”. Today this model is the basis of the most recent linguistic analyses, so it is important to go back to Vailati’s thought and outlines - where he considered not only verbs but also nouns and adjectives – especially because this information is not very well known. Summing up his often deep and subtle ideas is also important in understanding the height of Italian thought at the beginning of the twentieth century, able to dialogue with the European and extra-European thought and conceive of new and valuable contributions.

PROFILO SOCIOLINGUISTICO DELL’ITALIANO DELLE ‘VERSIONI’: IL TRADUTTESE CLASSICO È UN SOTTOCODICE?
Tramutoli, Laura

it_IT
Socio-linguistic profiles of Italian ‘versions’: is classical translanguese a subcode?
This article deals with the variety of Italian used in translation from classical languages – the so-called ‘classical translanguese’ –, analyzing its linguistic and sociolinguistic properties and arguing for its inclusion in the diasystem of contemporary Italian as a subcode (Berruto, 1987). Characterized by a high degree of formality and formalization, translanguese marks an opposite trend on all axes of socio-linguistic variation with respect to the current re-standardization process of Italian, typically oriented to accommodate sub-standard traits. The paper is articulated as follows: paragraph 1 contains an introduction in which the notion of ‘classic translanguese’ is framed; paragraph 2 gives a socio-functional profile, clarifying which circumstances determine its emergence; paragraph 3 identifies its peculiar linguistic features; paragraph 4 argues that translanguese should be considered a subcode of the Italian diasystem and paragraph 5 contains brief conclusions; finally, paragraph 6 compares the properties of translanguese and neo-standard Italian.

“We must translate, not betray!”: Icilio Bianchi’s proposals in defense of the Italian language (1939-1940)
This article deals with the Italianization proposals put forward by Icilio Bianchi in the pages of the magazine L’albergo in Italia (1939-1940), in the months immediately preceding the establishment of the Commissione per l’italianità della lingua. The replacement strategies adopted by Bianchi are analyzed in light of categories already highlighted by other studies, and are then related to the interventions that would soon be promoted by the Commission itself, as well as by other supporters of linguistic purism of Fascist period: on the one hand, it was possible to measure the specific degree of originality of Bianchi's work, on the other, to confirm the substantial failure that characterized all of the puristic experiences of the 1940s.

Recent food and wine italianisms in the English language: a corpus analysis
The Italian language has always played a key role in the European and extra-European linguistic scene, significantly influencing most Romance languages as well as some Germanic languages such as English and German. As an illustration of this, one need only think of the phenomenon – reinforced by globalization – of Italianisms occurring in several languages. This scientific article aims to identify and investigate the lexemes of Italian origin that, in the last few years, have infiltrated the English language, the lingua franca par excellence, especially with regard to food and wine. To this end, the Oxford English Dictionary was used as a starting point and the Dizionario di italianismi in francese, inglese, tedesco (DIFIT), an lexicographic work that includes over 5,000 Italian words commonly used in the French, English and German languages as a benchmark. Three different corpora were analyzed for research purposes: enTenTen 15, available within in software Sketch Engine and two corpora obtained from The New York Times Cooking and the BBC Good Food, the culinary sections of the American daily newspaper The New York Times and British public service broadcaster BBC, to estimate the presence of italianisms in American English, using British English as a benchmark.

Comparative analysis of conceptual constructs [and + a] and [and + in] based on selected examples from Italian, Spanish and French: a cognitive study
The article is a brief cognitive analysis of Italian word events realizing a conceptual construct [TR + AND + PREP + LM], which at the surface level consists of the Italian infinitive andare followed by a complement introduced by one of the Italian prepositions a or in. During the research, different ways in which the mentioned scene is constructed are compared with similar examples whose source is in two other Romance languages, namely Spanish and French. This type of analysis allows to trace both similarities and discrepancies in the conceptualization of extralinguistic reality among users of the three language systems, which are apparently considered very similar. The analysis was performed on the basis of R. Langacker’s cognitive grammar with a particular focus on the trajector-landmark relationship, and M. Johnson and G. Lakoff’s theory of conceptual metaphor.

The linguistic form of Il Viaggio per l’Italia di Giannettino (Giannettino’s Journey Across Italy) displays some of the well-known and expected characteristics of Collodi’s language, in the name of a Tuscanism tempered by constant reference to the pan-Italian literary tradition. The Tuscanist wave is predominant at the lexical level, but Collodi was very careful to avoid drifts of popular terminology, which in this book and in other ones are expressly mentioned as not preferable. Collodi - though not declaring it openly - contributed to delineating (in writing practice even more than in grammatical prescription) the traits of moderate Manzonism, based on the medium and “civil” linguistic usage of Florence, which found one of its happiest and most fruitful applications in Collodi’s production for children. The systematic analysis of the text, proposed in this paper, enriches Collodi’s linguistic studies with new data and confirms some of the traits that best embody the Manzonist model of Collodi’s language (monophthong in place of the velar diphthong after palatal contoid, -o ending in the first-person singular of the indicative imperfect, oblique forms of the third-person singular pronoun with subject function, prevalence of the type che cosa in interrogative clauses and many others); furthermore, it highlights the diachronic variation in the different editions of each volume of the book and underlines the stylistic differential which characterized the last two volumes and especially the third one. In these volumes Collodi’s style seems more adherent to the literary tradition, yet contaminated by the inclusion of popular terms, according to a linguistic model which was probably influenced by his mentor and friend Giuseppe Rigutini.

«IL ROMANZO D’UN MAESTRO» DI EDMONDO DE AMICIS: PRIME INDAGINI SULLA LINGUA E LA SUA EVOLUZIONE
Del Mauro, Miria Martina

url:https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/promoitals/article/view/17147
it_IT
Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis: preliminary investigations of language and its evolution
The paper proposes a linguistic investigation of the first half of Il romanzo d’un maestro by Edmondo De Amicis. From the graphic, phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic point of view, a comparison is made between the printed edition from 1900 (the last published during the author’s lifetime), with the first edition from 1890 and an autographed version of the text, conserved at the L. Lagorio Civic Library in Imperia. The article frames the changes that took place within De Amicis’s theory and linguistic practise as well as in the linguistic landscape and in the grammatical and lexicographic reflection of his contemporaries. The linguistic choices of De Amicis have almost always been compared with those of Manzoni’s Quarantana: De Amicis is Manzonian, but not slavish, and with an autonomy of views in the formulation of linguistic-didactic proposals characterized by the use of contemporary Florentine which dissolves into classic Tuscan and, to a limited extent, in the use of the dialect. In Romanzo d’un maestro there is therefore a conciliatory linguistic eclecticism, also recognizable in the pages of Idioma gentile: although the Manzonian model is the preferred one, its openness towards alternative models dampens the most radical implications of the Master’s thought, in agreement with those who recognized the moderate character of De Amicis’s linguistic choices.

A communicative interpretation of punctuation in the French grammar books of the XVIII century: manzonian examples
The article provides a brief examination of the reflections on punctuation in some of the main eighteenth century French grammar books, in order to point out their modernity, depth of their analysis and the influence they exerted on modern syntax, not only in France. The first section observes how, in the face of the recent history of punctuation, the grammarians of the Enlightenment deviated considerably from the prevailing trends in Italy. In fact, they dedicated ample space to the subject, going beyond providing simple rules for use that oscillated between a pausative interpretation and a syntactic interpretation of the signs, which not infrequently were reduced to vagueness regarding the free will of the writers. The ample and acute observations, barely connected to mere practice (therefore scarcely usable at a didactic level), were mostly related to the problematic relationship between orality and writing, changes that occurred over time within the writing system and to the logical and semantic foundations that presided over the organization of discourse, where punctuation took an active part. We then proceed with the direct observation of some writings, in particular remarkable examples provided by the works of Claude Buffier, Abbot Girard and Nicolas Beauzée. Despite the differences in their treatments, these grammarians shared a reasoned approach to the problem, which began with a detailed analysis of the text and which also offered the basis for a fertile dialogue between interpretative, sometimes divergent, approaches. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, their proposals reached Italy, where Manzoni, in Promessi Sposi, seemed to have been influenced by them. Hence, a series of cases demonstrate this. Think, for example, of the use of the comma between subject and predicate – that Italian grammarians theorized only from the twentieth century with Malagòli – when the first was expanded or thematized; or the use of italics – still considered, in a peninsular environment, the prerogative of the typographer – to signal a citation, in the text, of another written text: reflections that can be found, at least until the late nineteenth century, only in the grammar book by Beauzée. Finally, a few concluding considerations place these works within studies on punctuation and clarify the link between them and Manzoni’s text, also in relation to the diffusion of the communicative-textual paradigm in the Italian grammatical panorama.

note di carattere dialettologico, riguardanti gli esiti di forme latine o proto-romanze in italiano e nei dialetti gallo-italici (bergamasco, in primis) o relative alle particolari sfumature semantiche osservabili nel lessico del bergamasco;
annotazioni di natura linguistica sulla comparsa di costruzioni romanze in sostituzione delle costruzioni latine, e sulle innovazioni semantiche romanze ravvisabili all’interno dei frammenti citati ad esemplificazione di ciascun lemma;
Notes for an edition of Glossario Bergamasco Medioevale by Antonio Tiraboschi
This paper describes the structure and the content of Antonio Tiraboschi's Glossario Bergamasco Medioevale, currently preserved at the Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo, consisting of four manuscripts and unpublished notebooks containing more than 2000 alphabetically organized headwords. The sources, both published and unpublished, from which Tiraboschi drew the fragments cited as part of each lemma are described and a classification of the annotations into three subgroups is proposed:
notes of a dialectological nature, concerning either Latin or proto-Roman forms in Italian as well as in the Gallo-Italic dialects (Bergamasque, in primis) or relating to particular semantic nuances observable in the lexicon of Bergamasque;
linguistic notes on the appearance of Romance constructions replacing Latin constructions and questionable Romance semantic innovations in the fragments cited as examples of each lemma;
onomastic observations, concerning toponyms, microtoponyms and - more rarely - personal names.
This analysis is preliminary step towards creating a digital edition (available in Open access mode from the home page of the Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai) of the precious linguistic materials which compose the Glossary and a corresponding paper edition, which will favor the valorization and fruition of the work carried out by the Bergamasque scholar.

The history of voices, languages and linguistics by Carlo Tagliavini
This essay traces the history of Carlo Tagliavini’s Lingue e Linguistica entries published in 1934 in the XXI volume of the Enciclopedia Italiana. After reconstructing their genesis and summarizing their contents, the paper focuses on the work of revising and updating the articles that Tagliavini carried out during the following three decades. The original articles were expanded and transformed into independent publications. The fact that this reworking – which went on until the 1960s – originated from two encyclopaedic entries shows the importance of Tagliavini’s participation in the linguistic section of the Enciclopedia Italiana.

For a multimedia museum of the Italian language. Starting with the visitor: an initial survey of interest in the Italian language space
The article presents the first results of a survey about the interest of Italians in various linguistic aspects of the Italian language. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire, with a sample of about 1200 respondents. The aim of the study was to identify a list of attention-grabbing topics, in order to develop a section of the Multimedial Museum of the Italian Language (MULTI) dedicated to linguistics. The questionnaire, which consisted of different work phases (interviews with experts, pretest, final questionnaire, sampling and dissemination), was structured in order to conduct a descriptive analysis with statistical means. The data collected through the questionnaire identified the issues that aroused more or less interest among the target audience, highlighting the need for customized digital dissemination strategies according to visitors and topics. Some topics emerged as particularly attractive for the audience: in regards to the “inside” space, the most appreciated theme was the world of dialects (especially the literary and artistic production and the new uses of dialect); for the “external” space (that of Italian in the world), respondents regarded the “Italianisms”, the language of emigrants and that of immigrants, as the most interesting issues. The conclusions of this survey allow us to imagine the section of the MULTI dedicated to the linguistic space of Italian as a dialogic and inclusive one, which puts the visitor and his/her creativity and own interests at the core.

Diachronic morphology and gender equality
This paper is part of the study of gender discrimination, in particular focused on some morphological dissymmetries. The study, based on the use of printed and electronic dictionaries, aims to demonstrate how Italian, a language that has a powerful morphological resource, sometimes especially for the denominations of certain occupations – engineer, architect, lawyer and judge – encounters rule blocks certainly not due to grammar, but dependent on a male-oriented worldview (not infrequently rooted and introjected by women themselves) and by the extralinguistic context that impedes normal application. For the purposes of this study, for a survey that takes into account the change in the frequency of use of the names of the professions under analysis in a fairly wide time span- from 1800 to 2019- Ngram Viewer, a Google program, was used to analyze corpora of texts of many languages, including Italian.

PAROLE MIGRANTI.

Migrant words. Igiaba Scego’s migrantisms
The novels of the Somali-born writer Igiaba Scego are characterized by a marked multilingualism. Especially in the early novels, we find Somali, Arabic, Spanish, French and English words, mixed with Roman and Neapolitan dialect voices. Using these works as a corpus, a glossary of the 153 “migratismi” that have been traced is proposed. For each one, any graphic variants, the grammatical information, the language of origin and the semantic field are reported. A definition of meaning is given from internal sources (Igiaba’s glossaries) or external sources (e. g. vocabularies or neological repertoires). In the absence of sources, the definition is taken from the context. For each “migratismo”, the list of occurrences in the corpus is given and also a brief comment in which the data relating to the spread of the word in the comparison corpora are reported.

Venere privata from Scerbanenco and Bacilieri: language, style and rhetoric from literature to comics
Giorgio Scerbanenco’s novel Venere privata (1966) is among the progenitors of the contemporary Italian detective story and introduces the character Duca Lamberti, a doctor disbarred for practicing euthanasia on a patient and becoming, once he has served his sentence, a consultant to the Milanese police. The author’s narrative, language and style, which have already been studied by several specialist papers, are now the subject of Paolo Bacilieri's comic book adaptation, appearing serialized in Linus magazine starting in August 2021. The publication is expected to be completed in the magazine within the year, and a full volume edition for Oblomov is planned for Fall 2022. The present study deals with the first six installments of the adaptation, studying the language and style in relation to the original text, the depiction of the environments, characters and situations in relation to the diegetic elements of the novel and external models used by Bacilieri, and finally the configuration of the iconic and verbal elements in the tables in rhetorical perspective. This allows us to understand not only the process and concept of adaptation implemented by the author, but also his reading and interpretation of the story, language and style of the original text.

Other recipes by Petronilla (1937): linguistic observations
The investigation focuses on the cookbook’s adherence to the canon of prescriptiveness, highlighting its lexical supports, which refer to the role of the enunciator and the pressure on the addressee, recurrent verbal forms and allocutives. The common pattern of the recipes is divided into promise-difficulty and warnings-result, with a promotion of the dishes that closely resembles the advertising message: elatives, alteratives, anaphora, in the context of a conception of good cooking whose parameters are affordability, speed and ease of preparation, substantiality, tastiness, novelty, and “making an impression”. Particular space was given to the dialogical nature of Petronilla’s words: vertical, with the constant questioning of the readers about the number of people, the difficulties in making a dish, the small preferences in preparing it; horizontal, within the text, among the characters who appear and interact with each other. Within the dense web of fictitious questions to the readers, the pragmatic and textual value has been sought, starting with those with which the contact with the “little friends” begins and ending with the stereotypical “Didn't I tell you?” that emphasizes, in the finale, the achievement of the promised results. On the basis of the pragmatic and rhetorical scaffolding and metalinguistic annotations (clarifications on the name of the dishes and their origin, explanations concerning medical terminology), the paper traces some similarities, albeit with the lexical dissimilarities that the diversity of the subjects dealt with imposes, with the language of the other character invented by the author, Dr. Amal.

Notes fo a history of Rinaldo Corso and the Fondamenti del parlar thoscano
Throughout the sixteenth century, numerous figures participated in the editorial, linguistic and grammatical panorama. Future and sporadic historical interventions did not allowe time to spare the very high profile of one of them: Rinaldo Corso. An in-depth study of the historical-philological issues related to his work has revealed much more than what superficial studies carried out in this direction have revealed so far. The analysis of the different editions of his grammatical work, the Fondamenti del parlar thoscano, and the study of the environment he lived in concur in corroborating the hypothesis of the indispensable centrality of this intellectual, at the expense of the tyranny that history and memory sometimes reserve for people of great cultural value.

Digital and multimodal textuality: observations on reel structure
The aim of this paper is to analyze the textual structure of reels, short videos disseminated on the TikTok platform. The methodology used attempts to bring into dialogue the conceptual categories of text linguistics with the studies on multimodality developed in the field of socio-semiotics. Although reels share the general characteristics of hypertexts, some specificities emerge. For example, reels are characterized by a content arrangement more similar to that of the page than to the continuous scrolling pattern of “traditional” hypertexts designed for computer screens. A highly coded arrangement of contents on the page ensures that the various semiotic resources used acquire additional positional meanings. Also relevant appears to be the redefinition of hierarchies between graphic, acoustic and visual components. Gestures, expressions, and postures do not merely perform an integrative function to verbal communication but stand alongside it, imposing themselves as the primary level of signification. The coexistence of spoken and written word determines a new centrality of writing. However, the written word almost never reaches the phrasal dimension. Rather, it consists of scraps of text, key-words that fit perfectly into the model of digital writing conceived as a database, and as such exempt from the cohesive constraints of traditional textuality.

From pragmatics to semantics: metaphorical uses of leave-taking greetings in Italian
The topic of this paper is the figurative senses of the main Italian leave-taking greetings, i.e. addio, arrivederci, buonanotte, buonasera, ciao, ti saluto, tanti saluti. The use of leave-taking formulas in functions other than that of greeting, such as the use of ciao in accetterò la sua proposta e ciao, is widespread in Italian, however it has never been investigated. Therefore, the paper first aims to provide a detailed description of such uses, based both on information that can be obtained from lexicographic sources and data from corpora. It will then be argued that these uses can be described, rather than as ironic as dictionaries suggest, as genuinely metaphorical, since they exploit the reference to the farewell conceptual frame to express concepts such as leaving, ending, and disagreeing.

The reasons for grammar: the Regole ed osservazioni della lingua toscana by Salvatore Corticelli, between continuity of the normative proposal and structural novelties
Salvatore Corticelli, a Barnabite father and professor of theology and philosophy, is a significant voice in the linguistic panorama of the eighteenth-century and is the author of Regole ed osservazioni della lingua toscana, which is destined to have a systematic success on a national scale and combines the theoretical study of grammatical prescriptions with the correct practice of writing, with the aim of encouraging the learning of the language and its ensuring effectiveness. The article gives a first study about Corticelli and the importance of the Regole: considering the author’s life, the years of teaching in Bologna and evaluated his whole production, the grammaticographic work will be illustrated in the two author editions (1745 and 1754).

From lasciviousness to ambiguity: the territory of Tasso’s ingenuity
The essay aims to analyze the locutions and passages in the Liberata that were judged lascivious, ambiguous or immoral both in the early phase of the revision of the poem and after its publication, during the occurrence of the sixteenth-century controversy. The linguistic comparison between the Liberata and the Conquistata made it possible to ascertain how and whether Tasso accepted the criticism, showing in some circumstances flexibility and willingness to alter the text, in others determination in confirming the previous poetic choices in the rewriting.
