ROBOT UMANOIDI, GENERE E LINGUAGGIO. “SIAMO DELLA STESSA MATERIA DI CUI SONO FATTI I SOGNI”

Abstract

In questo saggio verranno illustrati alcuni aspetti relativi a un nuovo tipo di comunicazione recentemente ma velocemente entrato nella nostra vita quotidiana e destinato sempre più a farne parte.  Ci riferiamo alla comunicazione essere umano-robot, e in particolare a due diversi tipo di robot: (a) i chatbot, cioè i software progettati per simulare una conversazione con un essere umano, usati per esempio come una guida online per rispondere alle domande degli utenti che accedono a un sito; (b) i robot umanoidi, cioè macchine con fattezze simili a quelle degli esseri umani, programmati per essere «al servizio della società e del benessere collettivo. Verrà esaminato in particolare il rapporto tra linguaggio e assegnazione di sesso e genere ai robot, con specifico riferimento all’uso della lingua italiana. L’obiettivo è riflettere sulla possibile prospettiva che lo studio del rapporto fra linguaggio dei robot, soprattutto umanoidi, e rappresentazione di donne e uomini, fondamentale negli studi di genere e finora apparentemente relegato all’ambito umanistico, sociologico e filosofico, apre nel campo della robotica, e sui nuovi scenari che l’avanzamento tecnologico in campo robotico, apparentemente funzionale solo al progresso scientifico, richiede di adottare da parte degli studi sul linguaggio.

In this essay we will illustrate some aspects related to a new type of communication recently but quickly entered into our daily lives and destined more and more to be part of it.  We are referring to human-robot communication, and in particular to two different types of robots: (a) chatbots, i.e. software designed to simulate a conversation with a human being, used for example as an online guide to answer questions from users accessing a site; (b) humanoid robots, i.e. machines with features similar to those of human beings, programmed to be at the service of society and collective well-being. In particular, the relationship between language and the assignment of sex and gender to robots will be examined, with specific reference to the use of the Italian language. The objective is to reflect on the possible perspective that the study of the relationship between the language of robots, especially humanoids, and representation of women and men, fundamental in gender studies and so far apparently relegated to the humanistic, sociological and philosophical, opens up in the field of robotics, and on the new scenarios that technological advancement in robotics, apparently functional only to scientific progress, requires to be adopted by studies on language.
