Abstract

This essay wants to outline the linguistical physiognomy of news concerning information about nuclear energy, examining, through a particular lexical lens, the linguistical reasons why the disaster to Chernobyl nuclear power plant and, subsequently, the one occurred at Fukushima nuclear power plant are such interesting case studies. For this reason, in order to conduct such a research, it’s been chosen as reference sample a corpus of articles printed by three national newspapers: La Repubblica, Il Corriere della Sera and La Stampa. The analysis of paratext brings out the linguistical peculiarities of each newspaper that, starting from the headlines, has reported the facts of 1986 and 2011. The miscellaneous nature of environmental discourse has brought forward a reflection over the lexicon used by the newspapers to talk about nuclear matters, exploring a lexical sample of technical and scientific terms and foreignisms that characterises such news. The study makes evident a growing interest regarding environmental news, rendering science a matter sharable with the vast public, with the consequent lexical enrichment of journalistic writing. The sectorial language of nuclear energy, formulated anew and adapted to specific informative necessities, enters this way in the field of news.
