Abstract

In 2012 the Accademia della Crusca added links to the main social networks, Facebook and Twitter, on its website to showcase its projects and activities and provide users with an additional access point to the contents published on the web portal. Visitors follow with great interest the daily posts and tweets arising from the daily ‘language question section’ that answers questions about language usage. Some topics are particularly popular: the posts and tweets that receive many likes/hearts, shares/retweets are those that deal with correct spelling and pronunciation, apostrophes and accents, the use of the subjunctive, irregular verb forms, the overuse of Anglicisms, catchphrases, dialects and regional Italian. On the social media platforms, users express their views and share opinions from very different standpoints, in line with the well-known communication dynamics of social networks but also according to their knowledge and mastery of language issues. In my role as Social Media Manager of the Accademia della Crusca, I have created a small but significant corpus of comments on the Accademia’s posts and tweets that enables us to identify the linguistic behaviour of the large community that follows the Crusca’s web pages and the way in which they interact with the Institution, with a particular focus on the dynamics of disagreement.
