<p>Nata nel 1999, <em>Materiali di estetica</em> è una delle più note e apprezzate riviste di estetica in Italia e ha ospitato fin dall’inizio i saggi di alcuni tra i maggiori esponenti della disciplina, affermandosi come autorevole periodico scientifico nel variegato panorama degli studi estetologici nazionali e internazionali. L’originaria ispirazione fenomenologica, riconducibile agli studiosi della «Scuola di Milano», ha offerto notevoli impulsi al dibattito filosofico contemporaneo, dando vita a un proficuo dialogo tra posizioni anche molto distanti tra loro.</p> <p><em>Materiali</em> <em>di estetica. <p>According to Fulvio Papi, Giordano Bruno defends European culture by countering the “myth of the noble savage”, fuelled, in the modern age, by the discovery of America and supported, among other things, in Montaigne’s reflections on cannibals. However, Bruno’s is a “moderate Eurocentrism” which not only condemns the violence of the conquistadores, but is also based on a primitive idea of progress: all beings, in fact, are equal from an ontological point of view, since they are born through spontaneous generation, but only human beings, even the savages of the New World, can and must, thanks to manual industriousness, move from nature to civilization, of which European one is the model, however improvable. It is therefore in metaphysics and in the relationship between matter and form that, for Papi, the reasons for Bruno’s conception of European civilization must be sought.</p>Manuele Bellini

<p>Education as a philosophical issue, as a personal experience and as a cultural expression of our time has run through Fulvio Papi’s work longitudinally. The works dedicated explicitly to this subject have been interwoven with those of witnessing, on several occasions, the cultural history of the School of Milan, without neglecting the ‘autobiographical’texts, where the memories of school, teachers, schoolmates and the experiences that made them eloquent find their place and ever new meaning. There is, however, also a more subtle focus on education, which emerges in Papi’s work as do the Karst landscapes, close to his beloved Trieste. Taking this scenario as an imagine of meaning, it is also possible to find hidden strata and fertile ground in other texts, where one’s own formation is anchored in the ability to emerge as a culturally aware and socially responsible self. In particular, <em>The Luxury and the Catastrophe</em> (2006) stands out for its formative intensity. Here, the ‘feeling of life’ of becoming a subject is grafted into the ethical-social dimension in at least two ways. The first way, argumentative, concerns the ego’s relationship with reality, where catastrophe is grasped as the current world-form and luxury corresponds to the form of thought from which it is impossible to separate oneself, even when it risks sterilising understanding. The second, methodological mode identifies in the processes of adhesion and differentiation of the ego from the self the only real possibility of coming to terms with a relationship with the world that is inexorably partial and lacking. Just like <em>poljas</em>, Papi’s books are fields (the world-forms) that are always fertile because they are irrigated by streams of water or hidden aquifers (the subjectivities) and surrounded by rocky outcrops (the luxury of thought) that protect and bound them. <p>The combinatory restriction known in linguistics as selection restrictions are generally assumed to be a kind of linguistic structures, either syntactic or semantic, or at best cognitive structures. The idea discussed in this paper is that selection restrictions, although relevant for the description of complex meanings of linguistic expressions, do not belong to the structure of either language or cognition. Instead, they are criteria for conceptual consistency. They form a layer of shared presuppositions that lie at the grounds of consistent human behaviour and therefore of consistent thought and expression and belong to a natural ontology shared far beyond the boundaries of a given linguistic community.</p>Michele Prandi
