Abstract

Geo-politics, Rhetoric, and Food Security after the 2022 Price Crisis

This article examines how the 2022 global food crisis reshaped the discourse of major emerging powers on the international food politics. Using critical geo-politics, geo-economics, and discourse analysis, it investigates how China, Russia, Brazil, and India – key BRICS food producers – responded to food crisis. Despite being integrated into the global food system, these states increasingly frame food security in terms of national sovereignty, territorial control, and strategic autonomy. Geopolitical rhetoric has intensified around grain stocks, land acquisitions, and export controls, yet no alternative vision of the agri-food economy has emerged. These powers leverage globalization’s contradictions to reposition themselves, often in collaboration with multinational corporations and financial actors.
