In the reflections of 1823 and 1824, Giacomo Leopardi permanently abandons the explanation of evil based on the critique of perfectibility – developed in the span of 50 pages in the Zibaldone ‒ which found in Adam's sin of cognition the origin of the fall of Humankind and the resulting trust in «narrow society». Even in the first operetta, we face a very different situation compared to the one encountered in the philosophical rewrite of Genesis: misery, which is also seen as being in an archetypal exile, is no longer attributed to the voluntary corruption of humankind. Instead, it is attributed to an innate imbalance and to the essence of things: it is ascribable neither to an Edenic past nor to a hypothetically pure alterity in the present. In a time when redemption of any sort is ruled out – precisely for this reason one cannot even talk about a crisis ‒ , the Prometheus Bet fails miserably: the individual, in whatever for he comes in, can't do anything but exercise his morphological arrogance, inserted in a system of necessary and independent evil which, in the end, will deny the nature and the history of humankind.
