Abstract

Romano Guarnieri and the teaching of italian L2 in Perugia and the Netherlands during the first half of the  19th century

This article is a critical analysis of Romano Guarnieri (1883-1955), a Florentine intellectual whose name is linked to the history of teaching Italian to foreigners. His method was experimented with great success starting in the 1920s at the first summer courses at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. It had been developed in the Netherlands, where Guarnieri carried out intense activity in promoting Italian language and culture, founding the Dante Alighieri Society and the academic tradition of Italian Studies. The need to renew the teaching of foreign languages was felt by Guarnieri, thanks to his experiences abroad and his approach to language teaching (largely based on the teacher’s personal charisma), and seems to be deeply connected to the developments of European research in the field of the language teaching between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His biography and the history of the founding of the University for Foreigners of Perugia allows us to reflect on fascist cultural propaganda abroad and the oscillation between collaboration and autonomy that characterized the attitude of intellectuals and cultural institutions during the 1920s.
