Abstract

«For simple and healthy school use». Directions and writing exercises in grammar books and language education text books from the first decades of the 19th century

The article explores some significant examples of the changes in teaching writing which started in the early part of the 20th century in Italy. After an outline of the general situation of teaching writing at school (typical compositions and texts, place in school curricula, tools), some significant contributions and innovative works will be reviewed. Particular focus will be on Giuseppe Lombardo Radice and other educators, without neglecting the influence of linguists who were more willing to renew and more sensitive to school and social changes. On the basis of this analysis, we would like to retrace little-known but interesting precedents to better understand the current situation.
