Abstract

Autobiographies of emigrants from San Marco in Lamis: linguistic and textual characteristics

The essay examines four autobiographies written by emigrants in Australia originally from San Marco in Lamis (FG), a town in Puglia. Three features of these texts are taken under consideration: the relevance of the linguistic-cultural competence; the phono-morphological aspect of the documents, where the dialectal substrate with efforts towards standardization can be found; the textual aspect of the texts written to be understood by an unknown audience. The main focus is on the latter aspect, in an attempt to understand how the implicit contents and the content articulations of the texts are treated (in a linguistically rudimentary but communicatively effective way).  In general, the linguistic features of these texts are also found in epistolary communication within the context of emigration; however, there are some specific features which arise from the particular textual nature of broad narrative scripts, in which the usual conventions of letter-writing are not present.
