Abstract

Linguistic competence, pragmatic competence and interactional competence in the protests of second language Italian learners

The present paper compares the findings of two studies that have been conducted within the framework of acquisitional pragmatics and TBLT (Task-based language learning and teaching). Both studies focus on the acquisition in Italian of modifiers and discourse markers in complaints in oral speech, by L1 speakers of Dutch. Data have been collected on the basis of two sets of role plays in which the degree of familiarity between the interlocutors (low vs high) had been manipulated.  Study 1, investigates, more specifically, the effects of a self-paced online multimedia course on the acquisition of pragmatics, on the employment of internal and external modifiers, by six university students with an intermediate proficiency level of Italian (B1-B2). Study 2 examines the relationship between linguistic proficiency and pragmatic competence, in terms of use of modifiers, discourse markers and pragmatic strategies, by nineteen L2 learners of Italian, with different proficiency levels (B1-B2 vs C1-C2).
