Abstract

Once there was the method: twenty years later

In this paper, we present and discuss the first results of a survey on the teaching of Italian in CPIAs launched within the INDIRE research on adult education. These are some answers obtained through an online questionnaire created to investigate the teaching methodology adopted in the various Italian courses - from literacy to B1 and B2 levels - and thus answer the key questions of the research: what teaching methodology was adopted for Italian L2? Is the communicative method still the prevalent one? The answers,  covering a fairly representative sample of teachers from 130 Italian CPIAs, confirm only in part the prevalence of the communicative method, but, above all, they question it through examples and explanations that demonstrate, on the one hand, a limited awareness of the theoretical and practical value of notions and techniques and, on the other, the crisis of approaches conceived and developed in years that, although not far away, now seem as distant as different geological eras.
