Abstract

Linguistic puzzle and authentic language: a didactical proposal for listening to a song in a sub-standard variety to students of Italian as a foreign language

In teaching Italian as a foreign language, songs have proved to be an appreciated and very flexible tool in adapting to the needs of teachers in relation to the objectives they want to achieve. Furthermore, Italian songs have long been functioning in many countries of the world as a “soft” vehicle for the unconscious diffusion of the language and culture, and consequently play a fundamental role in building the motivation in students. For the higher levels of the CEFR, listening practices in Italian as a foreign language should also include inputs aimed at providing an overview of the complex situation relating to diatopic varieties. In this sense, Italian songs, thanks to a consistent tradition of quality authors who have expressed themselves in linguistic variants that are different than the standard or even in dialect, allow us to draw from a vast repertoire. However, to avoid falling into a context in which the input could be difficult to understand for foreign students, the selection of the variety for the listening activity proposed here has fallen on the Roman dialect since, in addition to being the variety of the capital, in the course of its history it has limited its original conformation of southern dialect approaching the national standard. In the song object of the didactic activity, namely Tanto pe cantà by Ettore Petrolini in the version sung by Nino Manfredi, the main features of this sub-standard variety are present at every level of the linguistic spectrum, from phonetics to syntax. Furthermore, the traditional structure of the text, composed of two strophes with rhyming couplets and a refrain, facilitates the didactic work and general understanding. Compared to the classic activities of pure comprehension or a cloze test usually used in the classroom for listening, the working method applied in the activity proposed here and known as “linguistic puzzle” allows a greater active participation of the students, who are expected to apply to apply all their skills and knowledge to reconstruct, as faithfully as possible, the text of the song heard. In addition, group work stimulates the habit of an empathic approach towards other students, with whom proposals are hypothesized and shared. The effectiveness of the activity then allows teachers to further conceive open educational paths both in terms of linguistic variety in contemporary Italian or in conceiving a discussion about the cultural value of Italian songs.
