Abstract

The stratified didactic unit (UDS) in ALC: an operational model for full-class curriculum teaching

In this paper we present a new operational model to facilitate the learning of school subjects within multilingual classes with different skills: the Layered Learning Unit in ALC. The tools proposed were developed as part of an action-research on the "Prato Model", i.e. on Italian L2 services provided to schools in Prato in the first and second levels of education through the provincial protocol for the reception of foreign students and the intercultural development of the Prato area (2007). In addition to language facilitation workshops for non-Italian-speaking students with initial or elementary language skills, this model includes the so-called ALC (Apprendimento Linguistico Cooperativo (Cooperative Language Learning)) modules. Each module consists of a full class course of 4 meetings/lessons, conducted in ALC. This method based is on the integration between the principles of Cooperative Learning (CL) and the techniques of Language Facilitation (FL). One of the objectives of the ALC modules is to increase the accessibility of disciplinary content through two strategic resources: cooperation between students and didactic manipulation of input. The former is based on well-known principles of CL (Positive Interdependence, Simultaneous Interaction, Equal Participation and Individual Responsibility), the second on linguistic facilitation and text simplification. In the present work we will try to explore how and with what advantages it is possible to include within ALC a third strategic resource: the stratification of teaching material. After a quick reconnaissance of the so-called "rewritings with controlled difficulty", we will compare the Work/Learning Unit (UdLA), adopted in Prato as a tool for designing the ALC modules, with the model of the Differentiated and Stratified Didactic Unit (UDS), developed in 2006 by the "CAD Working Group" of the Department of Language Sciences of Ca' Foscari. The contrastive analysis of the two models and their integration in a third operating model (the UDS in ALC) capable of enhancing their respective strengths opens, in our opinion, within the CAD (Class with Differentiated Skills), new possibilities for work and interesting perspectives for  investigation.
