Abstract

“learning to learn”: observations on teaching writing at university

The essay questions the role of university studies in the process of acquiring language skills by students. The assumption of the study is that the academic world cannot be (nor feel) excluded from the educational process started in the previous cycles: in fact, students with pre-packaged target competences do not come to the university only to receive disciplinary knowledge. On the contrary, the academic path should represent one of the stages (the last) of the study path, assuming its educational responsibilities within a vertical curriculum related to language skills. For this reason, we propose some possible strategies that can be adopted in university teaching to improve reading and writing skills. The work conducted on this aspect can also benefit from the “maturity” (age and cognitive) of the students. For this reason, it seems useful to focus on an inductive approach and activities that stimulate metacognitive processes. The objective should be to promote the acquisition of tools that allow learners to "learn how to learn", therefore to possess consolidated techniques and methods to achieve, even independently, indispensable skills in the world of work. The didactic activities proposed are both addressed to lab spaces expressly dedicated to reading and especially writing, and possibly included in the curricular path of the humanities. In particular, the activities address aspects that, in most of the studies on the subject, are considered the most lacking in university students: metalinguistic awareness, knowledge of the differences between linguistic registers, extension of lexical baggage, textual organization.
