Abstract

Project for a dictionary of Italian-Albanian verbal valencies

We present the project for a bilingual Italian-Albanian dictionary of valency descriptions of verbs in the Nuovo Vocabolario di Base (NVdB) by De Mauro (2016). Out of a selection of 1,481 items from the NVdB, 336 were labelled High Availability (AD), 605 High Use (AU) and 538 Basic (FO). For each word, the meanings and sub-labels FO, AU and AD were taken into consideration for a total of 5,499 meanings. Our aim was to describe the syntactic behavior of each meaning: the obligatory nature of the link between two lexemes (when present) connected by a given preposition. The nature of such a preposition is not at all random, but part of the functional or grammatical framework of the verb and it changes in relation to the single meanings of the verb. Often the nature of objects is important (in the case of people and things), which makes the verbal valency vary. Valency behaviors are usually unpredictable in a foreign language. They cannot be transferred automatically from the mother tongue, but must be made explicit. Therefore, the aim is to help students by enabling them to use the appropriate constructions in Italian language, highlighting the differences between the two languages. The study comprised 3 parts: a preliminary phase, which was divided into a. identification of the theoretical reference models in line with the Common European Reference Framework; b. definition of the dictionary concept as a source of imitation and rules for developing linguistic creativity; c. existing valency dictionaries and reference models;  and an applied phase, where we selected basic verbs from the NVdB and identified a reference corpus from to take examples (CorDIC LABLITA); and finally, examples of dictionary article organization for syntactic structures: lemma, generic translator, use mark, auxiliary, valence, definition and examples. The meanings are numbered according to the valency structures and the most appropriate translation is given for each context. The examples proceed from the nuclear structure to comprehensive examples of complements and adjuncts in the simple sentence, argumentative clauses and adverbial clauses (temporal, causal, final, consecutive, concessive, hypothetical, comparative, modal and adversary). With these premises, the dictionary becomes a useful tool not only for decoding, but also for production. Users will, in fact, be guided to the development of grammatically correct sentences.
