Abstract

PAST SIMPLE AND THE IMPERFECT : A PROBLEM FOR CHINESE LEARNERS

In this article we briefly reflect on the difficulties Chinese learners may encounter in the recognizing and producing forms of the past tense and the imperfect in Italian.
A questionnaire, administered to 20 level A2- B1Chinese students, was divided into two tasks: 1) the recognition of the main verb and its aspects in 20 clauses, 2) the translation of 10 clauses previously chosen into the Chinese language. The first activity provided statistical information about the problems and types of errors. The second part offered the opportunity for a more qualitative linguistic reflection.
There were two distinct groups: the first group (60 % of students) recognized the forms of the main propositions, and a second group where only 25% of the students recognized the forms of the past.
The study allowed us to highlight that the difficulties faced by Chinese-speaking learners are based on: a) the nature of the Chinese language which, being an isolating language, categorizes aspects and forms of the verb in the past in a different way from Italian. The aspect is delegated to lexical items or it is inferred from the context of the sentence, i.e. the presence or absence of temporal signs, b) the structure of the sentence in the main action or foreground and the secondary action or background. While in Italian the temporal relationship of events leads to a precise verbal organization, in Chinese the organization of events is consequential and generally occurs through the juxtaposition of clauses according to the logical-causal or temporal sequence of events.
