Abstract

Acquisition of italian L2 in linguistic contexts with great internal variability. Socio- and metalinguistic competences in slavic language speakers in Naples

In this paper we present the results of a study involving 12 Slavic-speaking residents in Naples. Their linguistic repertoire was investigated through semi-directed interviews related to their experience in the capital of Campania. In particular, we studied the perception the subjects had of Neapolitan and the values associated with its use in order to verify whether the strong dialect component of the Parthenopean repertoire is seen as an obstacle to integration or, on the contrary, a useful means to establish effective relationships with native citizens. The productions elicited through the interviews were then analyzed for the frequency of five typical traits of the regional Italian of the area, namely the prepositional accusative, the pronominal doubling, the opposition of essere and stare, the substitution, in some contexts, of avere with tenere and the use of the formal courtesy pronoun Voi in opposition to Lei in the standard Italian. In general, the results show that dialect is considered to be an important linguistic medium to favor socialization in the strongly dialectical Neapolitan environment, and that the inter-language of the 12 informants show only some characteristic features of the Parthenopean variety of Italian. The complex of Parthenopean language is therefore quite clearly reflected in the linguistic repertoire of the foreigners living there, but there are also discernable inter-individual differences in the repertoire of a certain magnitude, which can be attributed to each individual’s socio-linguistic experience.
