Abstract

Aptitude and attitudes are among the individual differences which most affect both the process and the outcome of language and intercultural learning. Since their use is often tinged with ambiguity, it is useful, on the one hand, to highlight the differences between the two concepts (focusing on aptitude as a facilitating talent or personal disposition, and on attitudes as valued beliefs), and, on the other hand, to explore how these factors can impact on the individual's perception of her/his own ability. The relationship between the two concepts has important implications both in terms of methodological and curricular flexibility and in terms of relevant teaching practice.
