Abstract

Teaching geography tospeakrs of different languages: linguistic and didactic reflections

The migration flows in recent years in Italy have pushed schools to address new needs and realities and thus identify specific methodologies to promote the integration of foreign students while, at the same time, ensuring a good level of education to all students, Italian and foreign. In this context, an interesting aspect concerns the relationship between language and subject learning. This article addresses the question by presenting a case study related to the teaching / learning of geography in primary school, taking into account that learning the subject content is bound, on the one hand, to the acquisition of specialized language and, on the other, to the cultural dimension of reference. For this reason, a questionnaire was administered to students and teachers of five fourth-grade classes in order to find out about the relationship between language and the study of a specific school subject. Starting from the collected data, a proposal for a geography textbook was formulated, taking into account the main linguistic and teaching questions to be addressed, thanks to specific strategies and activities.
