Abstract

Italian language in the swiss school, the Harmos curriculum and and in educational practices

Switzerland, a multilingual country by statute, actively participated in the preparatory studies for the CEFR and incorporated its principles in strategic documents for language teaching in its public schools. However, innovative programs explicitly inspired by the principle of multiculturalism are not always followed up with corresponding practices. Moreover, with the entry into force of the HARMOS agreement, Italian has suffered a decline in the ranking of languages studied, often surpassed by English, which comes immediately after the two other national languages, French and German. In this article we observe the condition of Italian in the Swiss school, with a focus on the teaching materials in the French-speaking area of Switzerland, questioning the possible future of the Italian language in Switzerland.
