Abstract

The communicative “school lesson” in some primary school readers (1882-1913): pragmatic analysis of an expository modality

The article presents a pragmatic survey on a communicative event frequently represented in some readers for primary school written by female authors for children between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries: the school lesson. In these readings, disciplinary notions and behavioral teachings, rather than being presented in an abstractly expository way, are often framed in a dialogic-narrative frame that reproduces the context of an elementary class and therefore a lesson carried out in monologic but often also dialogic form, mainly based on intuitive-experiential methods. I analyze: 1) expository modalities, speech strategies and the textual organization of the “lesson-pieces”, with particular attention on conversation-like and school-like speech phenomena, such as questions formulated by teachers and mirroring strategies adopted towards the pupils’ interventions. These are also analyzed in the variety of their functions; 2) the representation of the lesson phases; 3) the types and functions of metatextual and interactional discourse markers; 4) the speech acts used (mainly) by teachers and the non-formal tones of their statements, in order to observe how the teacher - pupil relationship is reproduced and to shed light on the connection between the speech dynamics of the episodes and the didactic and edifying purposes pursued by the authors. Thus, the aim is to highlight the features of the dialogic-narrative expository choice, aimed at making the transmission of notions livelier and more engaging. The analysis also allows reflections on the socio-cultural role of teachers and on the enhancement of childhood in the 19th century: aspects that these texts reflect and which implicitly express points of view and auspices.
