Abstract

The translator’s “Inner theatre”: Edoardo Sanguineti and the ancient drama

As a theatre translator, Edoardo Sanguineti was deeply aware of the specific features of dramatic texts. In particular, he focused on their oral nature and the relationship with the primary addressee (i.e. the spectator). This article considers Sanguineti’s translations as a kind of pre-direction: his view and interpretation of the translated text had considerable impact on the staging. The article focuses mainly on two case studies: Bacchae directed by Luigi Squarzina (1968) and subsequently by Luca Ronconi (1978), and the only comedy translated by Sanguineti (The Assemblywomen produced by the Teatro della Tosse in 1979), which stands apart from the rest of his corpus.
