Abstract

The «Roman sketchbook» of inigo jones: linguistic reflections of a trip to italy

The article highlights the prestige and “technical” functionality of Italian used by one of 17th century Britain's major architects, Inigo Jones, through the linguistic study of a first-hand testimony: the notebook from his second trip to Italy, known as the Roman Sketchbook. A less well-studied specimen with regard to other similar texts – such as the Taccuino Italiano by Anton Van Dyck – the Sketchbook contains numerous Italian annotations. We analyze the Oxford English Dictionary and Worlde of Wordes by Giovanni Florio, along with a typology classification that orders the notes based on the degree of linguistic autonomy compared to the Italian sources of the Jonesian “working library”, of which a synoptic picture is proposed.
