Abstract

The article compares the principles of accessible language teaching, that is the teaching of languages addressed to students with Specific Language Needs (SLN), and the principles of plural approaches to language learning, specifically the intercomprehensive approach, in an effort to understand possible points of contact and friction. Starting from the examination of the existing literature on the subject, and referring specifically to studies carried out on the subject of SLN, we investigate the student’s language learning profile and the characteristics of the linguistic environment that promote the development of linguistic-cognitive skills. The fundamental principles of the intercomprehensive approach are then reviewed, as have emerged through the studies and practical experiences conducted by Bonvino, Capucho, Candelier, De Carlo, Dégache, Garbarino and Jamet. We also mention indications by experts at the Council of Europe in documents like Guide for the development and implementation of curricula for a plurilingual and intercultural education (2011) and FREPA - Framework of Reference for Pluralistic Approaches. Competences and resources (2012). This article does not aim to bring data from research in the field, but rather to open up a topic that, to our knowledge, is still unexplored. In fact, we intend to propose research paths that, in the future, can be developed by combining studies on intercomprehension (including recent developments towards inter-production) with those regarding students with SLN, in particular relating to the affective and motivational dimensions.
