Abstract

Language choices in Cameroonian families in Italy

This paper presents the first results of a study, still in progress, on the linguistic behavior of the Cameroonian community in Italy. After briefly recalling the sociolinguistic situation of Cameroon, which is also useful for analyzing the linguistic profile of Cameroonians in Italy, the contribution illustrates the linguistic repertoire of Cameroonians before and after their arrival in Italy. The article focuses in particular on the analysis of the linguistic choices found in some of the 50 families involved in the survey and located in different regions in Italy. The data objects of the research were collected through a series of interviews and participant observations which allowed us to analyze the perceived and experienced multilingualism of the informants. From the analysis of the results, it emerges that Italian and French have a prestigious role in the Cameroonian community while local languages, occasionally used in informal contexts, struggle for use in communicative interactions.
