Abstract

L1 and didactic translation in the teacher talk of teachers of Italian and English as foreign languages for special purposes

In foreign/second language teaching research, relatively little attention is paid to empirical studies on teacher talk, i.e. FL teachers’ speech used in the classroom, and even fewer analyses refer to the teacher talk of FL teachers for specific purposes. Furthermore, research on the intentional use of L1 and pedagogical translation (PT) among FLsp teachers is almost absent. Therefore, the present study investigates the use of L1 and pedagogical translation based on qualitative analyses of observations in 'Italian' and 'English' classes that focus in particular on differences between teachers of Italian and English, as well as on the uses of pedagogical translation as a technique to develop productive skills in professional genres. The results lead to the conclusion that pedagogical translation is used occasionally, mainly for terminological clarifications in both languages, however the ‘whispered’ modalities of L1 use among Italian LSsp teachers seem to indicate greater insecurity with respect to English colleagues. Both groups of FLsp teachers displayed strong tendencies to avoid using L1 and PT, not even as support in learning to write in professional genres.
