Abstract

New alphabets for new citizens. The literacy challenge in a global world

This paper analyzes the socio-linguistic situation of foreign illiterate adults who acquire and learn oral skills and reading and writing in Italian L2. In particular, profiles are drawn for women from Maghreb and illiterate political refugees highlighting: a) common characteristics, such as the fact, for example, they are adult students who need to acquire cognitive and study skills (almost) from scratch and they are characterized by a type of concrete and action-oriented thinking, b) the characteristics of the target, like the different weight given to learning language skills linked to lifestyle and the more pressing needs of migrants, c) the gender variable and the different emotional barriers which the teacher must pay attention to in order to achieve mutual educational success and efficiency. In conclusion, the author refers to some educational implications of the concepts analyzed, in addition to considering how theoretical texts and manuals increasingly qualitatively illustrate the Italian L2 teacher’s role in literacy.
