Authors are kindly requested to follow the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Examples for the general format of MLA research papers, in-text citations, and the Works Cited List are offered by the MLA Style page at Perdue Online Writing Lab website.

However, as the MLA style does not take our field nor multilingual publishing into account, please bear the following important qualifications in mind:

  • The MLA Style is made for English. If you write in French, German, Italian, or Spanish, please use the correct expressions/abbreviations in the given language.
  • Footnotes are not only welcome, but most often necessary! Comments, specifications, and discussions of texts, passages, variants, sources, bibliography, etc. will be developed in footnotes, where the standard MLA Citation Style for referencing sources will be applied as well.
  • Simple indications of sources and quick bibliographical references, without any specification and/or discussion, will be given in the text as standard parenthetical references, as it is explained here.
  • If more than one work by a particular author is cited, a shortened title for the particular work will be included in order to distinguish it from the others. Short titles of books will be put in italics and short titles of articles in quotation marks: e.g. Curtius, Europäische Literatur; Curtius, "Zur Literarästhetik."
