“Tralascio Olinto…”: riflessioni sul mancato ricorso a enargeia nelle argomentazioni di Demostene contro la politica di Filippo II

Sulla scorta di fonti e studi relativi all’utilizzo di enargeia da parte di Demostene, il contributo prende in esame alcuni passi, tratti dalla Terza e Quarta Filippica e dalle orazioni Sui fatti del Chersoneso e Sulla corona, nei quali l’oratore esplicita di non volersi soffermare sulle violenze perpetrate o sostenute da Filippo II su città e popolazioni. Si intende indagare le ragioni per cui una descrizione vivida dei comportamenti del re macedone non rappresenterebbe un argomento a favore delle tesi sostenute da Demostene nelle orazioni, evidenziando di contro come enargeia supporti invece le argomentazioni dell’oratore nei discorsi in cui si registra il ricorso a questo strumento retorico. L’articolo si propone di verificare in particolare le ragioni di carattere cognitivo, emotivo e logico sottese alla cautela di Demostene, da inquadrare anche nel contesto storico-politico in cui furono pronunciate tali orazioni. Particolare attenzione merita il proposito dell’oratore, specialmente nelle demegorie, di indurre gli Ateniesi a reagire prontamente alla rapida e incalzante sequenza delle conquiste di Filippo.
