Aristofane il populista? Retorica anti-establishment e tensione di classe nelle Vespe

L’articolo affronta il tema (ampiamente dibattuto) dell’agenda politica di Aristofane proponendo una lettura delle Vespe attraverso la categoria del populismo e una delle sue componenti fondamentali: la retorica anti-establishment. Si intende dimostrare che il concetto di populismo, inteso come «ideologia dal nucleo sottile» fondata sulla contrapposizione tra popolo puro ed élite corrotta, consente di superare l’alternativa tradizionale tra un Aristofane conservatore ed uno pro-democratico. L’analisi evidenzia come tanto Filocleone quanto Schifacleone facciano uso di una retorica anti-establishment, pur declinandola in modo diverso: popolare nel primo caso, paternalista ed elitista nel secondo. La commedia appare così attraversata da un populismo volutamente ambiguo, che smaschera l’ipocrisia dei politici, rivela le tensioni di classe che attraversano la democrazia ateniese e, al tempo stesso, non risparmia critiche al demos.
