Abstract

If there is a recurring yet contentious theme throughout the history of thought, it is surely human freedom, both in general and in some of its specific manifestations (free will, freedom of thought, religious freedom, freedom of action, etc.). For this reason, what follows makes no claim to originality. Nor to timelessness: a bit like trying to define, once and for all, starting, for example, from a pompous and grandiloquent Theory of Justice, what should be understood by freedom in every age and place. The purpose that inspires these pages is much more humble: they are intended solely to stimulate reflection, on a normative rather than praxeological level, on what should be understood by freedom, taking into account the major problems humanity will face in the 21st century.
