About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Avocetta publishes peer-reviewed original research, meta-analyses, reviews and short communications in a variety of ornithological fields including ecology, behavioural ecology, ethology, phylogeography, taxonomy, biogeography, and conservation. Although we accept contributions from any region of the world, the journal’s main target attains to the Palearctic bioregion.
Journal History
Founded in 1953, Avocetta has been regularly published since 1978 by the CISO (Centro Italiano Studi Ornitologici – Italian Centre for Ornithological Studies).
Since 2022, the journal is published exclusively online to guarantee the fastest editorial process and worldwide accessibility.
Since 2025, Avocetta is published by Milano University Press on its Riviste Unimi platform for Diamond Open Access journals.
Publication Frequency
Avocetta publishes one issue per year.
In 2023, we opted for online first publishing to further fasten the availability of accepted manuscripts.
Articles are therefore published with a temporary pagination within an annual volume as ‘online first’.
Volumes are closed at the end of each year, and articles receive a definitive pagination when the issue is closed at the end of the year.
Therefore, in the case of citations to articles published as ‘online first’, please do not indicate the pages, but only the DOI and definition of 'online first'.
Open Access Policy
Avocetta does not charge publication fees to authors (APC, article-processing charge) and is therefore a "diamond open-access” journal, providing a unique opportunity to publish high-quality content that is internationally accessible to any reader at no cost.
We trust in open-access science: authors publishing with Avocetta retain the copyright to their work, under the Common-Creative Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license.
The use of this non-restrictive licence lists Avocetta among the most open ornithological journals worldwide.
Pre-print and post-print options
The authors retain the possibility to publish their work as pre-print and/or post-print in any media they consider opportune when respecting the same CC-BY-SA licence allowed by Avocetta and properly citing the original source in case of the post-print (that is the original Avocetta paper). If the paper has been published as pre-print prior to submission we acknowlegde that this is stated in the submission procedure with link to access the pre-print.
Archiving
The journal has enabled the PKP PN (Preservation Network) plugin, in order to preserve digital contents through LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) project.
Publication process
Avocetta has chosen continuous publishing as its publication method.
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) will be assigned to each paper or short note accepted for publishing in Avocetta.
The Editorial Board guarantee a fast, but rigorous, peer-review process (about 28 days).
Once accepted the article will be immediately published online as an ‘early view’ paper with an assigned DOI.
