Abstract
The publication of the first Italian translation of Simon Fischer’s Scales, edited by Anna Modesti for Rugginenti Editore, marks a milestone in violin pedagogy in Italy. To appreciate the work’s innovative purpose, it should be situated within the broader tradition of violin-method literature, which from its beginnings to the present has undergone a decisive shift—from eighteenth-century treatises (Geminiani, L. Mozart, Tartini) to the systematic methods of the nineteenth century (Baillot, Rode, Kreutzer, Spohr). While earlier texts often relied on an “additive” progression of linear difficulties, the twentieth century saw an increasing convergence of pedagogy, performance, and research. Authors such as Flesch and Galamian, for instance, sought to rationalize violin technique into systems that were both more practical and more effective. Trained by Yfrah Neaman and Dorothy DeLay, Fischer belongs to this lineage not only as an heir but also as an innovator, successfully integrating—and further refining—the strongest features of the Franco-Belgian, Russian, and American violin schools. His pedagogical output now stands as a comprehensive framework that turns the practice of scales—and, more broadly, technical work—from a purely mechanical routine into a valuable tool for technical diagnosis and a direct bridge to the repertoire, supported by effective practice strategies, clear methodological guidance, and wide-ranging pedagogical insight. From this perspective, alongside Scales (discussed here), it is also worth mentioning Basics, already available in Italian translation edited by Enzo Porta, and Practice, forthcoming in Italian translation.
