This essay offers a critical assessment of recent arguments about the relevance of systems theory and considers such interpretations, examined under the light of global and transnational scholarship. The significance of tracing the relationship between the Ancient Roman concept of Societas and the modern notion of society is highlighted. The reconstruction of the interpretative schemes outlined by Parsons, Habermas and Luhmann is similarly appraised. The extent to which systems theory can yield significant results when applied to global and transnational context is critically examined.
