Abstract
Educating on the Code Napoléon: Legal Manuals and Translations in Napoleonic Italy
In the face of Napoleonic codification, both the authorities and jurists of the Kingdom of Italy found themselves in need of tools for mediating between the original text and the new legal practices. This article aims to provide an initial assessment of the publishing market for manuals dedicated to the Civil Code of 1804, with particular attention to translation initiatives. The specific case of the Manuale degli ufficiali dello stato civile (Novara, 1809), a reworked translation by jurist Giacomo Giovannetti of Le guide de l’officier de l’état civil (Paris, 1806), will be analyzed.
