Abstract
This article examines why Nicolò Bettoni translated and published James Harrington’s Political Aphorisms (originally published in 1659) in 1802, the year when Napoleon Bonaparte founded the Italian Republic. Bettoni’s edition is interpreted as an active intervention in the circulation of texts in the age of revolutions. Long overlooked, it offers an original contribution to the adaptation of Harrington’s ideas within Napoleonic Italy.
