Abstract

[EN] This contribution investigates the editorial trajectories of literary works from the African continent, originally written in English and considered for the acquisition of translation rights by Italian publishers in the 1950s. Specifically, we will follow the vicissitudes of two novels by South African writer Peter Henry Abrahams Deras (1919-2017), which were taken into consideration by two Milanese publishing houses between the early 1950s and the end of the decade. Path of Thunder (1948) was accepted for publication by both Baldini & Castoldi in 1953 and Mondadori in 1960; Wild Conquest (1950), instead, was rejected by six different publishing houses between 1951 and 1965, and never entered the Italian publishing market. The research proposed here is archival: the Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori in Milan opens the way to wide-ranging research paths as well as investigations based on a limited corpus of documents, such as this one, but no less challenging and adventurous.
