Abstract

In the 12th book of his Geography, Strabo complains about the difficulty in correctly mapping the ethnic boundaries between Mysians and Phrygians, pointing out an identity issue that, for various reasons, also affects the identity-making of Romans and Trojans. Born under the banner of the post-ideological debate, today’s trendy identity studies have opened up new areas for historiographical surveys, nevertheless raising new problems and sometimes proposing solutions which are themselves ideological. Reading the past in the light of modern issues and patterns will be shown not to be such a new thing, but to have emerged in ancient times. This paper aims to find a solution to the identitary problem raised by Strabo and to shed light on a mechanism that periodically reappears when reflecting on historical themes through the ages: the past read through lenses which do not necessarily have relevance for the period in question.
