Introduction to the Journal
Artology: Studies in the Arts is an interdisciplinary and experimental platform that explores innovative work across various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance, photography, visual culture, digital media, music, theater, dance, and art education. By embracing unconventional approaches to understanding works of art and their creation, the journal seeks to foster thoughtful dialogue that connects these creative practices and offers critical, scholarly reflections on their role within contemporary society.
Artology is a Diamond Open Access journal which publishes two issues per year (June and December) and welcomes submissions from scholars, artists, and practitioners worldwide.
Each issue features academic articles alongside visual essays, artist writings, interviews, experimental projects, and reviews of exhibitions, performances, films, and books that contribute to global art discourse.
China has emerged as a key global center for creative production, with both local artists and international professionals gaining recognition on the world stage. However, much of this progress remains challenging to access outside of China, primarily due to language barriers, geographic distances, and the intricate nature of its creative landscape. These factors also shape the theory, history, and criticism of art, opening new avenues for discourse. Artology seeks to bridge this divide by offering an international platform that highlights these critical insights and creative voices, making them available to a worldwide audience.
Our distinctive approach facilitates substantial opportunities for engaging with critical reviews, emphasizing the Chinese creative context and highlighting its rich and dynamic culture for international attention. We include in-depth reviews of exhibitions, art events, creative projects, and book publications—particularly focusing on how these aspects shape and reflect China's creative landscape and foster dialogue between Chinese and global studies in the arts.
The journal aims to broaden the scope of artistic and creative studies by inviting contributions that question traditional boundaries. It serves as a progressive educational platform for reflective and transformative work. We encourage a variety of submissions, including traditional academic pieces and experimental formats—such as case studies, visual essays, artist books, and multimedia collaborations—that resonate with our commitment to innovation and creativity.
