Abstract

A good knowledge of game habits with an educated sporting spirit have made possible in many a country that hunters became
a most important strength in nature conservation and in wise use of natural resources of which birds are such a noticeable part.
We cannot say the same for italian hunters which often are ignorant even of elementary features of the biology of game species. Surely this is not due to the hunters themselves as we completely Jack in our country field books, ecologica! guides and like literature on the problem. Moreover we have not a sufficient technical body to accomplish an adequate propaganda among hunting societies and clubs. Beginning in this number of « Avocetta» a series of small monographies of the main game species the Italian Ornithological  Association thinks to solve one of its duties as well as to get approval from protectionists (too aften protectionists above all) and hunters (too often hunters above all)
