The Truth in Fifth-Century Greek Scientific Literature

Greek scientific literature from the fifth century promises its audience an accurate reconstruction of the truth and explicitly outlines the method by which this reconstruction is achieved. Reading selected passages from works of philosophy, historiography, and medicine reveals not only the methods employed but also the rhetorical strategies adopted by authors to make their arguments persuasive. Why do these authors feel the need to use persuasive strategies? The forthcoming excerpts will highlight a consistent theme in the authors' poetics: the models proposed in physics, the reconstruction of human events, and the corporeal reality of humans serve a fundamental social role. It is important for the audience to recognize this role for an objective improvement of their socio-political structures and, more broadly, their lives.
