Abstract

This paper proposes a socio-legal analysis of sex work in the sphere of virtual platforms, one of the largest and growing market areas of the so-called gig economy. In the first part, the focus will be on the prostitution regulation in force in Italy and, above all, on how the latter can apply to the digital sex work sector. In the second part, the article will question how Italy's regulatory architecture manages to capture the social changes triggered by digitalization, in a sector that has always teetered between lawfulness and illegality. Finally, our analysis will discuss, from a sociological perspective, the existence of a -problematic- dualism between the legal-regulatory approach to digital sex work and the discipline of prostitution activities carried out in the real world.
