Aristophanes’ plays, unknown to the Latin Middle Ages, were reintroduced in the West at the dawn of the Quattrocento. Ancient Greek drama gained immediate popularity among humanists, and Old Comedy texts circulated widely throughout Renaissance Europe. In fact, Latin versions were the principal medium through which Aristophanes was introduced into the high Latin culture of the Western world. Thanks to humanist Latin translations of the plays, scholars were able to access the Greek text of the comic poet, who figured prominently in the educational curriculum of the time. This study focuses on a little-known Latin version of Aristophanes’ Clouds by Bruno Amerbach, which is preserved in the manuscript Basil. F. VI. 50 (sec. 16in) at the Universitätsbibliothek in Basel. This hitherto neglected codex is of particular interest because the Latin version it contains appears to be among the earliest translations of Clouds in the 16th century.
This paper examines the translational strategies employed by Bruno Amerbach to make Aristophanes’ 5th-century BC Greek text accessible to a 16th-century Latin-reading community. The analysis ultimately sheds light on the history of the transmission of Aristophanes’ text and the scholarly activity surrounding the plays during this period.
