Abstract

After providing a brief overview of the role of touch in Latin literature and, in particular, in rhetorical texts, this paper focuses on Cicero’s works. As Cicero, like most other ancient authors, does not devote explicitly sections of his writings to this sense, the investigation is conducted on some words (verbs, adjectives and nouns) which evoke touch in his oeuvre. Special attention is paid to Cicero’s rhetorical works and what emerges is Cicero’s contribution to defining touch and its functions – the cognitive function taking pride of place – within the context of Latin abstract language and ancient philosophical thinking.

Andrea Balbo è professore ordinario di Lingua e letteratura latina (L-FIL-LET/04) presso il Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università degli Studi di Torino, dove è anche Presidente del CCS in Language Technologies and Digital Humanities. Insegna inoltre all’Università della Svizzera italiana di Lugano. I suoi principali interessi di ricerca gravitano intorno alla retorica e all’oratoria latina, a Cicerone e Seneca, alla storiografia tardoantica, alla didattica del latino, alla funzione veicolare del latino tra cultura occidentale e orientale nonché alle Digital Humanities. Tra le sue principali pubblicazioni si ricordano I frammenti degli oratori romani dell’età augustea e tiberiana. Parte prima.
