Abstract

The article analyses Mishima Yukio’s play Madame de Sade focusing on the final act in which the Marquise Renée, after having supported her husband during the long years of his imprisonment, refuses to meet him and retires to a nunnery. Through the prism of the theories developed by Kuki Shūzō in The Structure of Iki, the protagonist’s apparently irrational choice is reinterpreted in an existentialist key as an act of self-determination that redefines the meaning of her existence. The analysis of the final pages of the play highlights how iki—and in particular the conceptual poles of amami and shibumi linked to it—are fundamental to understand Renée’s transformation into a symbol of autonomy and freedom.

Loris Zevrain è dottorando in Studi linguistici, letterari e interculturali in ambito europeo ed extra-europeo presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano. La sua ricerca gravita attorno alla letteratura giapponese moderna e contemporanea, con particolare attenzione a temi identitari e al rapporto con l’alterità. Attualmente sta indagando la pulsione scopica e le sue implicazioni euristiche nelle opere narrative, teatrali e cinematografiche di Mishima Yukio. Tra le sue pubblicazioni, “Vis à vis: lo sguardo di Orfeo e Izanagi” (2022) e “L’archetipo del bambino divino nel Buddhismo esoterico” (2021).
