Abstract

According to Alfredo Civita, Bergson is representative of the philosophy of personal experience, ranging from Brentano to Husserl; he does not consider him neither a simple moment of the development of philosophical thought carrying out to the transcendental phenomenology, nor, on the other hand, a defender of the anti-scientist intuitionism inspired by later Romanticism. Personal experiences are psychic realities, the «immediate dates of consciousness» composing the moi profond and the real duration, which is the authentic way of being of the individual, analysed in the Essay (1889). Anyway Civita’s principle worth is the commentary to Matter and Memory, the best work by Bergson, even if it is understudied: Civita appreciate the originality and the theoretical importance of this book, also admitting the complexity and the contradictions.
