This return to the question of Alalia, the Phocaean foundation of Corsica, seeks first to offer another interpretation of Herodotus' text (I, 163-167), which has always been considered the essential source; it aims to show that this is a direct account by the descendants of the Phocaean exiles, rather than a historian's assessment. It then takes a critical (and above all self-critical) look at the reading of this text. Finally, it aims to offer a broad historiographical assessment, taking into account the different ancient perspectives that explain, in particular, the silence on Marseille.
